Festival of Bangla films begins in Kolkata

A week-long festival of Bangla films from Bangladesh and West Bengal of India will begin in Kolkata from April 18. Nandan Cinema Hall and West Bengal Film Centre will jointly organise the festival featuring the films based on Bangla literature. The organisers have selected sixteen films, eight from Bangladesh and the rest from West Bengal, to screen at the festival. Films will be screened at Nandan Cinema Hall in Kolkata. The Bangladeshi films include ‘Megher Por Megh’, story by Rabeya Khatun with direction by ChaNazrul Islam; ‘Daru Chini Dweep’, story by Humayun Ahmed with direction by Toukir Ahmed; ‘Duratta’, story by Humayun Ahmed, direction Morshedul Islam; and ‘Nirantar’, story Humayun Ahmed, direction Abu Sayeed. The films also include ‘Ek Khanda Jomi’, based on Shahabuddin Nagri’s poem and direction Shahjahan Chowdhury; ‘Shyamal Chhaya’, story and direction Humayun Ahmed; ‘Shankhanad’, story Nasrin Jahan, direction Abu Sayeed and ‘Ghani’, story and direction Kazi Morshed. All the films are produced by Impress Telefilm. The organisers will screen Bimal Bhoumik’s ‘Dibaratrir Kabya’; Goutam Ghosh’s ‘Padmanadir Majhi’; Rajen Tarafdar’s ‘Ganga’; Shachin Mukharjee’s ‘Kaal Tumi Aleya’; Kartik Chaterjee’s ‘Saheb Bibi Golam’; Partha Pratim Chowdhury’s ‘Chhaya Surya’; Purnendu Patri’s ‘Swapna Niye’ and Tarun Majumar’s ‘Gana Debata’ from West Bengal. According to the organisers, the festival will be the first of its kind and the movie goers will enjoy the contemporary Bangla films based on Bangla literature in the two parts of Bengal, Bangladesh and West Bengal of India. They hope that this sort of festival will encourage the filmmakers to continue film making based on stories from the rich Bangla literature. The organisers will also distribute the ‘Hiralal Sen Padak’ for this year to the best filmmaker during the festival. The festival will continue till April 24.
Show on Beijing Olympics begins

A ten-day photo exhibition on the 29th Beijing Summer Olympic Games began on Monday at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. Special assistant to chief adviser, Mahbub Jamil inaugurated the show titled ‘Beijing Welcomes You’ as chief guest while cultural affairs secretary Sharful Alam and Chinese ambassador Zheng Qingdian were present as guests. A total of 63 photographs on the life of the Beijingers and on the preparation of the 2008 Olympics are on display. The show will remain open for all from 10:00am to 5:00pm everyday till March 26.
