National Rabindra Sangeet
fest begins

Nikhil Sen will be honoured

The 19th National Rabindra Sangeet Festival, organised by the Bangladesh Rabindrasangeet Shilpi Sangstha, began at the Shaukat Osman Memorial Hall of the Central Public Library in the city on Wednesday.
   President of the organisation, Kalim Sharifi inaugurated the festival with the slogan Shubha karma pathe dhara nirbhoy gaan.
   The festival, dedicated to the late veteran artistes–– Jahanara Nishi and Abinash Chandra Shil, Selim Al-Deen and Mahbub-Ul-Alam –– will continue till March 8.
   The four-day programme features music, recitation and seminar.
   Cultural activist and Tagore song researcher, Professor ABM Nurul Anwar of Mymensingh was present as chief guest.
   About two hundreds of artistes from across the country are participating at the festival, said the organisers.
   After the inauguration, noted singers including Anup Bhattachariya, Iffat Ara Dewan, Mita Haque, ATM Jahangir, Saiful Islam Khan, Azizur Rahman Tuhin, Anup Kumar Pal, Sharmin Rahman Chaity and Adrita Anwar, among others, sang Tagore songs.
   Silence was observed for one minute in honour of noted publisher Chittaranjan Saha, regional folk singer Shefali Ghosh, film star Aslam Talukdar Manna and and eminent journalist Bazlur Rahman.
   Today, the organisers will accord a reception to Nikhil Sen, a distinguished cultural personality of Barisal at 5:00pm. After that, recitation and Tagore songs performance will be held.
   On the concluding day of the festival, the organisers will hold an open discussion on the use of modern instrument in Tagore’s song, beginning at 5:00pm.


New body of BFFS formed

Bangladesh Federation of Film Societies recently formed a new executive committee for the year of 2008–2009.
   Sirajul Islam Khan and Shakhawat Hossain have been selected as the general secretary, said a press release.
   The committee members are Ramala Saha, Ashfaqur Rahman, Mofizul Kabir, Abdur Razzak, Oli Ahmed Bhuiyan, Harunur Rashid and Sajal Khaled and the executive members are Farukul Islam, Nazrul Islam Khan, Khaled Saifullah, SA Faruque, Akramul Hoque and Nurudullah.
