RUBBER DAM ON RIVER MATAMUHURI
80,000 acres of land to get
irrigation facilities

AKM Zahoorul Huq . Bandarban

THE Bangladesh Water Development Board plans to construct two rubber dams on the River Matamuhuri to bring 80,000 acres of land under irrigation facilities in Bandarban and Cox’s Bazar.
Officials said the project would be implemented utilising the water of the Matamuhuri, dropped down from hills in Bandarban, that criss-crosses Lama and Naikhyangchari upazilas of Bandarban and Chakaria and Pekua upazilas of Cox’s Bazar towards the Bay of Bengal stretching 50 kilometres through 30 union councils.
The higher authorities have given the nod to erect two permanent rubber dams on the Matamuhuri at a cost of Tk 40 crore that was planned a few days ago to sort out the staggering irrigation problem of over thousands of cultivators, said the executive engineer of the BWDB, Mohammad Shamsul Karim.
Thousands of farmers will be able to utilise the water to be stored inside the reservoir of the dam throughout the year for the irrigation to boost up their cultivation. Step is afoot to float tenders shortly to implement the project, said the executive engineer.
To ensure irrigation facilities to the farmers, the BWDB had spent over Tk 70 crore for construction of temporary cross dams on the river during the last 21 years, Shamsul Karim said, terming it ‘misuse.’
After the construction of two rubber dams on the Matamuhuri, an area of 30,000 acres of land will be brought under shrimp and salt cultivation apart from expanding irrigation facilities
to farmers to cultivate more than 80,000 acres of land, the official said.
