Jute fields attacked with
pests in Faridpur

Our Correspondent . Faridpur

Farmers fear drastic fall in production of jute in Faridpur this year as their crop fields have been attacked with various kinds of pests.
Jute production will largely fall short of the target this year due to massive pest attack on a vast track of land in different upazilas of the district, some farmers said.
According to sources at the Department of Agricultural Extension, 55,000 hectares
of land has been brought under jute cultivation with
the production of seven lakh bails.
In 2007, six lakh bails of jute were produced in the district by cultivating on 65,000 hectors of land, DAE sources said.
Faridpur is one of the major jute farming areas of the country but farmers continue to lose interest in cultivation of the crop as they are deprived of fair prices of their produce, local sources said.
The climate and soil in the district is suitable for jute cultivation. Of the eight upazilas of the district, Nagarkanda, Bhanga, Sadarpur and Charvadrashan upazilas are noted for jute cultivation.
A kind of pest called ‘Jute Hairy Pater Piller (Bisha Poka)’ and Semi Looper (Lada Poka) have eaten leaves of young jute plants on a vast track of land, local farmers said.
Almost two-thirds of the jute fields in the district have been damaged by the pest attack, they added.
Sobahan Mollah, a farmer of Tulagram village under Koizuri union of Faridpur sadar upazila told New Age that pests almost eaten all leaves of jute plants on his field.
‘I will suffer huge losses from jute cultivation this year,’ he added.
Sheik Kuddus, a farmer of Hafezdanggi under Charmadhabdia union in the district sader upazila said this was for the first time that his jute field had been attacked with Semi Looper.
Semi Looper usually attacks paddy field but this year,
this pest has caused massive damage to the jute fields, he added.
He also said the local agricultural office could not provide them with necessary remedies to controlling the menace.
DAE officials said less rain coupled with high temperature is the main reason for massive pest attack on jute fields this year.
The farmers, who used pesticides in their jute fields early, got good results, they added.
