Robbers loot four houses
in Gazipur

Robbers looted four houses at village Tapirbari under Shreepur upazila in Gazipur early Saturday.
   Valuables, including gold ornaments and cash worth around Tk 4 lakh, were taken away from the four houses, according to villagers.
   Local sources said a gang of 45 robbers entered the house of one Riaz Uddin of the village at about 2:00am by breaking open the door with iron rod and hammer.
   The gang severely beat up all the inmates of the house, tied them up at gun point and took away valuables from the house.
   Nine inmates of the house were injured in the attack by the robbers. They are Ramiz Uddin, 38, Mozibur Rahman, 39, Rafiqul Islam, 22, Sadek Hossain, 18, Goljar Hossain, 42, Sahid Mia, 32, Jayada Khatun, 50, Taj Uddin, 40, and Safir Uddin, 50.
   Of the injured, Ramiz and Safir were taken to Dhaka Medical college hospital in a critical condition.
   The same gang of robbers then committed robbery at three other houses of the village the same night.
   They barged into the houses of Akram, Abdul Motaleb and Hafiz Uddin Chaukidar of village and took away valuables at gun point.
   Sensing the presence of the robbers in their locality, the villagers started gathering at one point. At one stage, they chased the gang and managed to catch four robbers.
   The four were identified as Liton, 22, of village Tapirbari village, Monir, 28, of village Tengra under Sreepur upazila of the district and Rana, 28, and Majnu, 32, of village Uthari village under Gaforgoan upazila in Mymensingh.
   Some villagers told New Age that they are passing days with fear as robbery incidents are increasing alarmingly in the area.


HSC examinee abducted, one
held in Narail

An HSC examinee was abducted from village Vowakhali under Narail upazila on Saturday.
   Quoting the victim’s family, the police said one Akkas along with his two associates had abducted Mostaq Ahmed Subuj, an HSC examinee while he was returning home from his private tutor’s house in the evening.
   Later, the kidnappers demanded Tk 50,000 as ransom from Mostaq’s mother Khadiza Anwar and threatened her to kill her son if she does not pay the money.
   Khadiza informed the police of the matter the same day asking them to immediately release her son.
   On information, the police raided the Rupganj bus stand area on Sunday and arrested Akkas.
   During interrogation, Akkas denied his involvement in the abduction, police sources said.
   A case was filed with local police in this connection.
   Mostaq was appearing in this year’s HSC exam from Narail Victoria College.


Fake ACC officer held in Pabna

Law enforcers arrested a fake Anti Corruption Commission officer in Pabna on Sunday.
   The arrested was identified as Helal Uddin of village Narayanpur in Gaibanda sadar upazila.
   The police picked up Helal from the Pabna office of the Public Works Department at about 11:00am.
   Police and ACC office sources said Helal posing himself as an ACC official entered the PWD office and started inspecting the work at the office.
   On suspicion, the PWD officials informed the district ACC office of the matter.
   The ACC officials rushed to the spot and after interrogation they came to know that Helal is not an ACC official.
   ‘After interrogation, we got confirmed that Helal is not an ACC officer and then we informed Pabna sadar police of the matter,’ Abdul Goffar, deputy director of ACC, Pabna office told New Age.
   On indormation, the police came and arrested Helal.
   The PWD filed a case in this connection, sub-inspector of Pabna police station, Md Nure Alam said.


850 bottles of Phensidyl seized

The police arrested two persons and seized 850 bottles of Phensidyl and eight kilograms hemp in their possession at shuganj upazila in Brahmanbaria on Saturday.
   The arrested were identified as Rony, 25 and Farhad, 25. Acting on a tip-off, a police team stopped a Dhaka-bound private car and seized the contraband drugs.


Hemp worth Tk 11 lakh seized

Members of the Bangladesh Rifles seized 218 kilograms of hemp worth about Tk 11 lakh at village Purba Doikhawa under Kurigram sadar upazila early Saturday.
   On a tip-off, a BDR team led by Havilder Alamgir Hossain and Nayek Ruhul of the Jatrapur border outpost raided the house of one Joynal and seized the illicit drugs.
   Sensing the presence of law enforcers, Joynal along with his associates fled the spot.
   The police said Joynal and his associates had long been involved in smuggling.
   A case was filed with the police in this connection.
