ground in Kurigram

Our Correspondent . Kurigram

Lemon cultivation has changed the lot of a good many poor farmers in Kurigram, a poverty-stricken district of the country’s northern region.
The people in the rural areas of Kurgram are mostly poor but now many have come out of the clutch of poverty by cultivating various kinds of fruits, particularly lemon, local sources said.
Many poor farmers of the district have improved their livelihood by cultivating lemon, they added.
One Kashem Ali of village Patrakhata under Chilmari upazila in the district has set an example of becoming self-reliance by farming lemon and other fruits.
A former teacher of Balabari High School in the area, .Kashem Ali told New Age that he had long been cultivating lemon and other fruits on his lands.
‘Every year, I earn around Tk 3 lakh from fruit cultivation and Tk I lakh of the amount comes from the sale of lemon.’
About 40,000 pieces of lemon worth around Tk 1 lakh are sold every year, he said.
‘I also give lemons, a citrus fruit, to my neighbours free of cost. Besides, I send lemons to my relatives’ houses.’
Three varieties of lemons, including local variety, China variety and Dak Jamir variety, are grown on 12 decimals of land near his house, Kashem said.
Dak Jamir variety is very popular as it is effective for curing various diseases like jaundice and cough, he said, adding it is also used for increasing milk of cows.
‘I also cultivate vegetables like oll kachu, ginger, turmeric and arum under the lemon trees,’ he added.
Every year, I earn Tk. 10,000 by selling ginger and turmeric, Tk.10,000 by selling bamboo and Tk 25,000 by selling betel nut.
Kashem has also grown some medicinal plants including Arjun, Karamcha, Gretakumari, Patharkuchi and Horetoki.
The fruit-bearing trees he has grown include mango, jackfruit, blackberry, litchi, papaya, coconut and Baukul.
Kashem Ali, locally called ‘’lemon specialist’, has been awarded the first prize in the agriculture fair for the last five years for best performance as farmer.
Kashem has built a semi-concrete house from the earning he made through his agri produce.
A father of two sons and three daughters, he is leading a happy life with his family.
His elder son Abu Salek Nayon appeared in the B.A examination this year while his younger son is a sociology department student at the Dhaka College.
