A nine-day theatre festival began on Friday at the National Theatre Hall of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in the city. Theatre group Samay Sangskritik Goshthi organised the festival to celebrate the 30th founding anniversary of the group. Ramendu Majumdar inaugurated the carnival, dedicated to the eminent playwright late Selim Al - Deen. The inaugural ceremony of the festival was followed by the presentation of Nimajjan by the Dhaka Theatre. The play has been scripted and directed by Selim Al Deen and Nasiruddin Yousuff respectively. With lyrical description, the playwright has reminded the audience that the civilisation, modern, medieval and ancient, are based on genocides of one race or religious group by the others. The director has very aptly visualised the idea on the stage. He has very successfully created narrative visual imagery using paintings and the effects of lightings. The choreography, done by Shimul Yousuff and Anisul Islam Hero, enriched the play. Shimul’s music also added emotion in creating the ambience of genocides. The organiser stages nine critically acclaimed plays by nine different theatre groups from home and abroad during the festival. Mayur Singhasan, scripted and directed by Mannan Hira and Shah Alam Dulal respectively, was staged on Saturday. Theatre group Anik from India will stage Punarijjiban today while Shikhandi Katha, Meraj Fakirer Ma, Deshdrohi, Kanjush, Bhager Manush will be staged on the following days.
