Two Pabna govt colleges
face teachers’crisis

21 posts out of 83 vacant for long

Mahfuz Alam . Pabna

TWO intermediate government colleges in Pabna town are facing shortage of teachers.
At least 21 posts out of 83 have been lying vacant in the two colleges — Government Women College and Government Shahid Bulbul College — since long. The two institutions have about 1,300 and 1,500 students respectively. The students and teachers of the two institutions said the shortage of teachers was hampering smooth academic activities.
In the Women College, at least 12 posts out of 24 — two associate professors, six assistant professors and four lecturers — have been vacant for over a year, college sources said. Just one teacher is teaching in each of the departments of Bangla, economics, chemistry and mathematics in the college.
The post of librarian is also remaining vacant in the college.
Students of the college complained that they were not having sufficient classes. ‘We often miss the class due to the teacher crisis and can hardly complete the course before the examinations,’ said Sumi Akhter, a second-year student of the college.
A number of teachers of the college told New Age that the academic activities were being hampered due to the shortage of teachers.
‘I am the only teacher of the Bangla department. How could I teach over a thousand students a day? It is obviously impossible to take 5/6 classes a day continuously,’ said Masuma Sultana, lecturer of the Bangla department.
Three posts in the Bangla department, one in English department, two in economics department, one in political science department, two in philosophy department, two in chemistry department and one in mathematics department of the college have been lying vacant.
The principal of the college, Md Khalequzzaman Choudhuri, said the authorities were totally reluctant to fill the vacant posts of the college.
‘I have sent the list of vacant posts to the higher authorities more than once. But we are yet to get sufficient teachers for the college. Due to the shortage of teachers the academic works are being hampered,’ the principal said.
In Government Shahid Bulbul College, nine posts out of 49 including eight for the assistant professors have been lying vacant since long.
One in the English department, one in economics department, one in philosophy department, one in sociology department, one in geology department, one in management department, one in chemistry department and one post in agriculture science department are now vacant.
The posts of sports teacher and the librarian are also vacant.
Science practical classes cannot be completed due to the dearth of the teachers and demonstrators. All the three posts of demonstrators are vacant.
‘It is true that after the ban on HSC admission in Government Edward College, the two other government intermediate colleges in the town are facing students’ pressure. But the teachers’ crisis of these two institutions is hampering the normal academic works,’ said Shibojit Nag, principal of the college.
He said he had recently joined the college and would take initiative to solve the crisis.
It may be mentioned that the intermediate course is remaining suspended in Government Edward College since 1996.
