February 1 marked the commencement of three day long celebrations for those associated with Pathshala, South Asian Institute of Photography on its completion of 10 years. Established on December 18, 1998 with the assistance of Drik initially, Pathshala is the first credible institution for higher education in photography in this region. 'Photography is not only about cameras and lenses, it is about telling stories on photographs, which we try to nurture in Pathshala,' says Shahidul Alam, founder of the institution. In its 10 years, the institute has managed to grow continually. A merger between Pathshala and the University of Liberal Arts Bangladesh (ULAB) is expected in March this year as part of its growth. In the meanwhile, Pathshala has gained international recognition from foreign institutions like the University of Bolton and the University of Sunderland in the UK. Exchanging experiences and different concepts of photography education elsewhere in the world have given Pathshala unique dimension to photography education. Many foreign students visit the institute to share their experiences and learn how Pathshala develops its students. A photography exhibition titled 'Studying Life' featuring the works of Pathshala students and alumni marked the beginning of its 10 year celebrations. The exhibition was inaugurated by pioneer playwright and theatre person Atiqul Huque Chowdhury on February 1 at Drik Gallery and is set to last till February 15, open to all from 3 pm up until 8 pm. On February 2, the Pathshala campus in Shukrabad, Panthapath played host to a series of events, starting with a distribution of certificates among the students, a discussion on photography followed by a portfolio presentation by the group 'Mukto Chokh' as well as a film show. The final day of celebrations on February 3, started off with a portfolio presentation followed by songs by Prachyanat and a dinner programme drawing proceedings to a close.
