Around 1,000 houses in different villages under the district have been eroded by the Madhumati and Arial Khan rivers during the period, local sources said.
The erosion has caused massive destruction in at least 50 villages in Sadarpur, Bhanga, Alfadanga and Madhukhali upazilas of the district, they said.
The situation has turned serious as the water level of the two rivers along the south and eastern parts of the district have increased, according to sources at the Water Development Board.
The Modhumati and Arial Khan rivers are now flowing above the danger mark on the impact of the swelling Padma, the WDB sources said.
Around 25 villages under Pachuria, Tagarband, Bana, Burich, Gopalpur and Alfadanga sadar unions in Alfadanga upazila have been affected by river erosion.
The erosion by the Madhumati has rendered more than 250 families homeless in the upazila, local people said.
Besides, around 1,000 acres of crop fields in different villages of the upazila land have gone into river water, they added.
A good many structures including primary schools, mosques and business establishments in the four upazilas are also under threat of river erosion.
Miraj Sharif of village Hidadanga under Alfadanga upazila said every year the Madhumati devours a vast area but the authorities concerned are yet to take any effective measures to check erosion.
The erosion-affected people in the area did not get any assistance, he said adding only the Red Crescent provided some relief goods for the erosion victims last year.
River erosion continues at seven villages under Noapara, Kamarkhali, Bagat unions in Madhukhali upazila. About 20 families have lost their homesteads and crop fields in the last two weeks.
The newly built Bir Srestha Abdur Rouf museum at village Salamatpur under Kamarkhali union faces threat of erosion it is only 50 yards away from the River Madhumati, the locals said.
The WDB sanctioned fund last month for protection of the museum from erosion but work is yet to start due to increase in the water level of the river, official sources said.
The erosion by the River Arial Khan continues to play havoc at 13 villages in Sadrpur and Bhanga upazilas leaving at least 150 families homeless and devouring huge crop fields.
The river has already devoured Charnasirpur Primary School under Dhewkhali union in Bhanga upazila. A mosque at Char Bolashia and an adjacent madrassah is also threatened.
The Nasirabad union parishad chairman, Rokon Uddind said Darga bazar, a big local market place of his union, may be eroded by the river any time although the WDB is trying to protect it by dumping sand bags.

The RAB sources said Mosharraf Hossain, father of the victim, had submitted a written complaint to the RAB-3 explaining that his son Khairul, 28, of Damurhuda in Chuadanga, had remained missing for the last 15 months.

During the quizzing, Munni admitted that she had been involved in various anti-social activities including prostitution for long without Rocky’s knowledge. When Rocky came to know about her dissolute life he sent Munni to her village at Chowdagram upazila in Comilla.
