53 die in Bandarban last year, the figure
was 346 five years ago

AKM Zahoorul Huq . Rangamati

THE prevalence of malaria has declined to a significant extent in the Chittagong Hill Tracts following a project undertaken by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and funded by the Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria with a tune of $39.06 million one dollar is equal to 68 taka).
The principal recipient of the GFATM, better known as Global Fund, the health and family welfare ministry, has been fighting to address malaria involving 17 non-governmental organisations, vesting major task with the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee in the 70 malaria-prone upazilas of 13 districts bordering India and Myanmar, said sources in the ministry concerned.
Earlier, a few NGOs, Directorate of Health and Family Planning as well as the World Health Organisation started reorganising the coordinated health service system, distribution of Long Lasting Insecticide-treated mosquito bed Nets and building up of awareness among the lagging-behind people of the CHT undertaking a project styled ‘Roll back malaria’ in 90s.
The ongoing project was designed to distribute 12 lakh long lasting insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets in collaboration with BRAC by the year 2012 to reduce prevalence of malaria and its onslaught in the CHT.
A number of 49,497 families will be provided with the long lasting insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets in the hill district of Rangamati at the first phase, according to a recent survey conducted by BRAC, working with health department to control malaria. It has been operating 24 laboratories to identify malarial patients for quick and latest treatment, said the civil surgeon of Rangamati, Dr Mohahammad Abdullah.
The plan in details was presented at a meeting held in connection with inauguration of distribution of the long
lasting insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets in the district at the conference room of the Rangamati Hill District Council on January 4, attended among others by the resident representative of WHO in Bangladesh, Duangvadee Sungkhobol.
The majority people of the CHT, living in the hard-to-reach areas, are hapless and do not have such financial strength to buy mosquito-nets, observed the civil surgeon of Bandarban, Syed Abdus Salam, saying the long lasting insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets were being distributed among them in the district at the first phase.
Bandarban hill district has been marked a ‘pan-endemic’ zone while Rangamati and Khagrachari are as ‘high-risk’ zone for malaria, the civil surgeon said, adding 80 per cent people of the district carried malarial parasite more or less with them.
According to statistics available with Bandarban civil surgeon’s office, malaria claimed the highest number at 346 in the district in 2002-2003. Fifty-three persons died of malaria during the last year out of 33,177 attacked with, said the statistics.
As many as 34,335 families out of 64,939 living in seven upazilas of Bandarban do not use any mosquito-nets, said a survey conducted by BRAC recently. And 17,506 families use a single net in the family while 13,098 families use two mosquito nets in the family, the survey found. Priority in distribution of the long lasting insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets will be given to those who do not use, said sources in BRAC.
BRAC in collaboration with the health department distributed 83,735 long lasting insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets among poor families in Khagrachari while it treated with medicine 53,371 used up mosquito-nets in eight upazilas of the district, added sources in BRAC.
