People hit by price hike of
construction items

THE prices of construction materials have marked sharp rise in different markets in Barisal over the last few weeks.
   The prices, which, according to traders, have increased by 20 to 70 per cent in two weeks, hit rural and low-income group of people hard. Besides, the soaring prices are also frustrating Sidr-hit people who need rehabilitation before the monsoon.
   The payment for day labourers and masons has also doubled after Sidr.
   According to market sources, prices of 16mm tin bundle have increased from Tk 1,900 to Tk 2,400, 35mm tin bundle increased from Tk 6,500 to Tk 7500, per packet of 80 pieces of screw for tin increased from Tk 80 to Tk 140, per kilogram of peg increased from Tk 80 to Tk 130 and nailed-wire increased from Tk 68 to Tk 80.
   The prices of per kg of iron-angle have increased from Tk 58 to Tk 67, per kg of flat iron-bar increased from Tk 60 to Tk 70, per kg of clam used for doorframe increased from Tk 60 to 70 and per kg of nut with bolt increased from Tk 70 to Tk 85 during the period.
   Besides, prices of hinges have also increased and per piece of three-inch hinge increased from Tk 10 to Tk 13, per piece of four-inch hinge increased from Tk 16 to Tk 19, per piece of iron-bolt
   cleat increased from Tk 70 to Tk 80 and per piece of steel bolt cleat increased from Tk 95 to Tk 120.
   Prices of door locks also have increased. The prices of per piece of two-inch China-lock increased from Tk 70 to Tk 80 and per piece 2.5-inch China lock increased from Tk 100 to Tk 120.
   Prices of per kg red-oxide colour used for coating low-cost housing have increased from Tk 120 to Tk 140 and per pound of normal colour increased from Tk 70 to Tk 90.
   Prices of per-thousand brick have also increased from Tk 4,000 to Tk 4500, per kg GI 24-gage increased from Tk 85 to Tk 100 and per kg of 3mm iron-rod increased from Tk 55 to Tk 70.
   A number of people at Ruia, Defulia, Gonpara, Kawnia, Alekanda and Sagordi area of the city, expressing their
   frustration, told New Age that their houses were damaged and destroyed by hurricane Sidr and immediate reconstruction and repairing of these houses needed before monsoon.
   But they are unable to reconstruct their houses due to soaring prices of the construction materials.


2 killed in Jessore, Cox’s Bazar

TWO persons have been killed in Jessore and Cox’s Bazar.
   In Jessore, the police recovered the body of an young man from a banana field at Barandi Mollahpara on Friday.
   The police suspected that the youth might have been hacked to death by unidentified criminals and was dumped in the banana field on Thursday night.
   The body was sent to the Jessore General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
   In Cox’s Bazar, according to a UNB report, a pregnant young housewife was allegedly strangled by her husband following a family feud at village Shikderpara under Teknaf upazila Thursday night.
   The police, quoting local people, said an altercation took place between Golbahar Begum, 20, and her husband Ali Hossain on Thursday night over a trifling matter.
   But at one stage of angry argument Ali Hossain strangulated her to death and then hanged the body to prove that she had committed suicide.
   Finding the body hanging from the ceiling of the house on Friday morning local people informed the police.
   The police recovered the body Friday morning and sent it to the Cox’s Bazar General Hospital morgue.
   The police also arrested Ali Hossain and his mother in this connection. A case was registered with the local police.


Four die in road accidents

FOUR persons were killed and three injured in separate road accidents in Lalmonirhat, Manikganj, Kishoreganj, and Sirajganj on Friday, New Age district correspondents have reported.
   In Lalmonirhat, a truck helper was killed and three others injured when a sand-laden truck fell into a roadside ditch at village Chandropur under Kaliganj upazila.
   The deceased was Nurunnabi, 36. The injured, truck driver Abdul Karim, 35, and two labourers Rezaul, 25, Hanif, 27, were admitted to the local health complex.
   In Kishoreganj, a housewife was crushed under the wheels of a bus at village Shimultala under Karimganj upazila.
   The police said Joyena, 25, of village Jangal died on the spot when a bus hit a rickshaw carrying her from behind.
   In Sirajganj, a horse rider, Mokbul Hossain, 45, of Sonapur in Natore, was killed on the Hitikumrul–Bonpara Highway at Kachikata under Tarash upazila.
   Mokbul died on the spot when a bus hit his horse at about 8:45am when he was returning home after participating in a horse race held at Gurudaspur in Natore. The horse was also injured.
   In Manikganj, a motorcyclist was injured when a bus rammed into his vehicle from behind in the Muljan area under sadar upazila. Later he died on way to Manikganj General Hospital.
   The deceased was SM Habibullah Nipun, 35, owner of Siddikia Block-Batik in Poura market and inhabitant of village West Dashra under the upazila.


Young man burnt alive

A YOUNG man was burnt alive in a fire at Banorgati under the Sonadanga police area in the Khulna city early Friday.
   The deceased was Md Tushar, 32, son of a former Khulna City Corporation deputy mayor late Iktiar Uddin Bablu.
   The fire originated from an electric short circuit at about 2:30am at the first floor of the residence where Tushar was asleep. Tushar was alone in the residence.
   The fire-fighters went to the spot and extinguished the blaze with the help of the local people and recovered Tushar in an unconscious state. He was taken to Khulna Medical College Hospital where the duty doctors declared him dead.
   Fire-fighters estimated valuables worth about Tk 2 lakh were burnt.
