Highway between Sirajganj,
Natore in bad shape

United News of Bangladesh . Sirajganj

VEHICLES are plying the Hatikumrul–Bonpara Highway between Sirajganj and Natore with high risk due to its dilapidated condition.
Local people said almost every day several road accidents take place on the important highway, causing loss of lives and untold sufferings to the passengers.
In order to cut short 60-km road distance between Dhaka and Rajshahi, the government started construction work of 56-km-long road from Nalka–Hatikumrul in Sirajganj to Bonpara in Natore through the Chalan Bil in 1999 at a cost of Tk 355 crore.
Two local construction firms, Mir Akhter Group and Monem Ltd, and two Chinese farms, China Road and Bridge Com and China Harbour, got work order for construction of the road.
The local people said though the two local farms completed their 20km construction works on time with reputation, the Chinese farms completed 36km works half-heartedly.
After completion of the construction work, the then prime minister Khaleda Zia inaugurated the highway in 2003.
Within one year of the inauguration, pitch on the highway started to be dislocated. In the last three years, a total of 27km of the highway constructed by the Chinese farms developed cracks and potholes and became almost unfit for vehicular movement.
A spot visit revealed that with utmost risk cars, buses and trucks, microbuses and auto-rickshaws are plying the road beside the highway constructed for plying of rickshaw vans.
Local people expressed their displeasure as the authorities concerned were not taking initiative to repair the highway. They urged the communications adviser of the caretaker government to visit the highway for having first hand information about their sufferings.
