Sirajganj-Kazipur Road link
snapped for 2 months

Floods damage three points of the road

Communication on the Sirajganj-Kazipur Road has remained suspended for about two months as the recent flooding washed away three points of the road.
   The people under Kazipur upazila has been virtually detached from the Sirajganj district headquarters due to the damaged road, local sources said.
   Three points stretching around 300 metre of the road had been totally washed away by the onrush of the floodwater, the sources added.
   Upazila people, in case of emergency needs, now go to the district town by crossing the three points by boat braving hazardous journey.
   The Kazipur pourashava chairman, GM Talukder, told New Age that about 70 per cent area of the upazila had been eroded by the River Jamuna in the last 20 years.
   Now only pourashava area of the upazila lies protected from the river erosion, he added.
   The development work in the municipal area involving around Tk 7.50 core were badly affected due to the
   flooding that damaged a
   good many roads, bridges and culverts.
   When contacted, Kazipur upazila nirbahi officer Md Waalid Hossain, said about 145km dirt tracks and 85km cobbled road were partially and fully damaged by the flood.
   Besides, around 6.00km stretch of embankment including the 4.50km Brammaputra flood control dam from Meghai to Shimla area in the upazila were completely washed away.
   Md Abu Rawshan, executive engineer of the Roads and Highway Department, Sirajganj, said nearly 3.4km stretch of road under the department in the district have been washed away and around 100 km were affected by the flood.
   Besides, the flood has partially and fully damaged four culverts and 49 bridges. The department estimated the flood loss at about Tk 280 core.
   The department already sent a report on flood loss to the authority seeking allocation for repair work, he added.
   Sources at the district relief and rehabilitation department said around 2,450km mud and cobbled roads in nine upazilas including four municipalities of the district were damaged by the flooding.


Indian saries seized in Comilla

The police arrested a man and seized 1,402 pieces of Indian sari worth about Tk 35 lakh from a truck in the West Shahajanpur area under the Comilla district headquarters Wednesday night.
   The arrested is Khurshad Alam, 35, of Balutoba of the upazila.
   Tipped off, a police team stopped the truck and seized the sari when those were being taken to Dhaka from frontier Borjala-Subarnapur area at about 4:15am.
   The truck was taken to Comilla Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate Office.
   Meanwhile, two persons including a college student were arrested with hemp near a bus stand under Brahman-
   para upazila in the district Thursday morning.
   The arrested were identified as Pritom Pal, 19, student of the Borodusha Medal College of South Chandrala village and Safiullah, 22, of Borani village of the upazila.
   On information, the police raided the area and arrested two persons and recovered 9 kilograms of hemp from their possession.
   A case was filed with the Brahmanpara police station.


Factory, bus looted in
Comilla, Pabna

Robbers looted cash and valuables worth about Tk 24 lakh in Comilla and Pabna on Wednesday.
   New Age correspondent of Comilla reports that a gang of robbers looted valuables
   worth about Tk 20 lakh from a factory at Charmanikchar of Debidwar in Comilla early Wednesday.
   The police said the gang entered KB Interlining Co, a joint venture of Korea and Bangladesh, at about 3.30am and took away three transformers and valuables.
   A case was filed with the police in this connection.
   No one was arrested till Wednesday evening.
   The Pabna Correspondent said robbers looted cash and valuables worth about Tk 4 lakh from a bus in the Bonpara Traffic Intersection area under Iswardi upazila in Pabna Wednesday night.
   The robbers in guise of passengers looted cash and valuables at gun point when the bus reached Bonpara Traffic intersection.
   The robbers also injured ten when they tried to resist them.
   The robbers stopped the bus at Kachikata Bazar on Bonpara- Hatikumrul Road and fled with the booty.


College students block
road in Gopalganj

The students of MH Khan Degree College in Gopalganj blocked the Gopalganj– Tekerhat Road as a fellow student was assaulted by transport workers Wednesday morning. The road communications remained suspended for two hours.
   The police said Biplab Biswas, who was coming from Rajpat in a bus, was assaul- ted during an altercation with the driver’s assistant over fare.
   The members on the bus staff beat him and he was admitted to Gopalganj General Hospital.
   As the news spread, the college students blocked the road and started fire with tyres. The police later brought the situation under control.
