Flood hits hard Kurigram farmers

TWO spells of flood in a span of less than two months has taken heavy toll on farmers in Kurigram.
   Nearly 28 per cent of crops and vegetables have been damaged in the second spell of flood that hit nine upazilas of the district in first September. The deluge first hit the district in mid July.
   Official statistics shows that the flood was affected one lakh and 57,427 farmers’ families destroying 27.91 per cent of crops and vegetables.
   Sixty-four unions out of 74 of the district have been affected in the second spell of flood this year. Huge amount of transplanted aman seedlings, transplanted aman paddy, vegetables and other crops have been damaged.
   According to Kurigram Department of Agriculture Extension, T-aman paddy on 6,001 hectares, vegetables on 250 hectares and other crops on 50 hectares have been damaged in the district headquarters.
   In Ulipur upazila, T-aman seedlings on 29 hectares ,T-aman paddy on 5004 hectares, vegetables on 26 hectares and other crops on 5 hectares have been damaged.
   T-aman seedlings on 5 hectares, T-aman paddy on 5,697 hectares and other crops on 30 hectares have been damaged in Chilmari upazila.
   In Roumari upazila, T-aman seedlings on 125 hectares T-Aman paddy on 6,284 hectares, vegetables on 45 hectares have been damaged.
   T-aman seedlings on 15 hectares T-aman paddy on 2,318 hectares and other crops on 5 hectares were damaged in Rajibpur upazila.
   In Bhurungamari upazila, T-Aman hectares T-aman paddy on 486 hectares and other crops on 19 hectares have been damaged.
   T-aman paddy on 5,490 hectares vegetables on 40 hectares and other crops on 36 hectares have been damaged in Nageshwari upazila.
   In Phulbari upazila, T-aman paddy on 1,280 hectares, vegetables on 20 hectares and other crops on 10 hectares have been damaged.
   T-aman paddy on 419 hectares, vegetables on 9 hectares have been damaged in Rajarhat upazila.
   The most affected upazila is Roumari where 76.15 per cent of crops and vegetables have been damaged. The least affected upazila is Bhurunga-
   mari where only 3.26 per cent crops and vegetables have been damaged.
   Bablu Mia, a 44-year-old farmer of Baliganj union under Nageshwari upazila, told New Age that he had cultivated aman paddy on his 14 bighas of land. The first spell of flood damaged all the crops. After the flood he struggled to manage aman seedlings amid crisis and could only manage for 8 bighas of land while the rest remained fallow. But the second-spell flood has damaged the crops again.
   Now it seems to be unrecoverable, he said.
   DAE officials, however, said the farmers were being given logistic support to overcome the loss.


Three suspected criminals lynched

Three suspected criminals have been beaten to death in Chittagong and Kushtia.
   The New Age staff correspondent in Chittagong said a mob beat two alleged robbers to death and injured another during a robbery at a house at Khurushkul under Anwara upazila early Saturday.
   The police and local residents said a gang of robbers entered the house of Nizam Uddin at about 2:00pm and the villagers encircled them as the family members cried out for help.
   The villagers captured three of the robbers and beat them up, leaving two dead on the spot and another critically injured.
   The police recovered the bodies and took the injured to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital.
   Identities of the deceased and the injured could not be immediately established.
   In Kushtia, according to a UNB report, an extortionist was killed in a mass beating at Harishankarpur on the outskirts of the district town early Tuesday.
   The police said Kana Suruj and his gang went to Battoil to collect their demanded toll from the local people of the area at about 2:00am.
   But local guards chased them and caught Kana Suruj, 25, near Chadagara graveyard while the other managed to flee the scene.
   The guards and local people beat and critically injured Kana Suruj. He was admitted to Kushtia General Hospital where he died later. He was accused in a number of criminal cases, the police said.


BNP leader arrested
United News of Bangladesh . Manikganj

THE police arrested Saturia upazila BNP general secretary and Boraid union parishad chairman Abdul Quddus Khan Mojlish Makhon on Tuesday.
   The police said there were many allegations, including criminal activities, misuse of power and misappropriation of relief materials from government fund, against Makhon. A case was filed against Makhon under the Emergency Powers Rules.
