Eid shopping peak in Pabna, Jamalpur

Eid shopping has reached its peak in Pabna and Jamalpur as all the markets in the two districs are witnessing huge crowd.
   Customers are mainly crowding shops of ready-made garments, shoes, and cosmetics in the markets.
   Traders said sari, punjabi and lehenga are in high demand. Apart from imported items, local items are attracting buyers, they added.
   Some buyers alleged that shop owners have increased the price of every item, particularly cloths and shoes targeting the Eid.
   Not only the Muslims but also members of the Hindu community are also busy shopping as Durga Puja festival will also be celebrated one week after the Eid.
   In Jamalpur, Eid shopping has gained momentum. But the markets can not attract the low income group people as the prices of almost all the items are abnormally high.
   Salesmen at different shops in the town said they are satisfied with their sale position. Mamun, a salesman said people are rushing to shops in large number.
   Latest designs of male and female dresses have been displayed .
   Panjabi with block print and hand work are selling at a prices ranging between Tk 380 and 1000. New design handloom cotton and silk saris are selling at Tk 260 to 5000.
   Children dresses, Panjabi are selling at Tk 150 to 500. Salwar-Kamij are selling at Tk 300 to 700.
   Huge crowd is noticed at the Kader Menson, Samad Market, Boshak Market, Kathakoli Market, Benuti Plaza and Fenshi Plaza.
   Buyers said the prices of all the items are sharply high this year. The low-income group
   people are crowding footpath shops.


Four held, Phensidyl recovered

The Rapid Action Battalion arrested four drug peddlers and seized 73 bottles and two liters of Phensidyl (codeine syrup), two kilograms of hemp from busses on Dhaka-Khulna Highway near near the district headquarters in Faridpur on Wednesday.
   Battalion sources said they arrested Feratul, 28, of Meherpur, Sheik Dip, 27 of Jessore and Mojibor Rahaman, 25, of Jhenaidah from a Barisal-bound bus and seized 48 bottles and two liters of Phensidyl in their possession.
   In another drive, the RAB nabbed one person and seized 15 bottles of Phensidyl from a Barisal-bound BRTC bus coming from Chapainawabganj
   The arrested was identified as Pintu, 18, of Kushtia.
   The RAB also seized 10 bottles of Phensidyl from Barisal-bound Eagle Paribahan coming from Dhaka. They were handed over to the Kotwali police.
   Meanwhile, the Rapid Action Battalion and the police in Barisal on Wednesday arrested six persons in possession of arms, ammunitions and 875 bottles of Phensidyl (codeine) syrup.
   The battalion's deputy assistant director Md Jahangir said they had seized a shutter gun, an air gun and a bullet in a raid on Kholapar early in the day and arrested one Mustafa Howladar, 30, of Jharjhariatala Mukandapatti in this connection. He was handed over to the police in the afternoon.
   The police said they had seized a microbus and 875 bottles of Phensidyl and arrested Zahidul, 28, Nure Alam, 26, suspected of peddling drugs, and the driver, Monir Hossain, 26, at Alekanda Kazipara early in the day. The police also seized the microbus having two number plates.


6 killed in road mishaps

Six persons were killed in separate road accidents in four districts on Tuesday and Wednesday.
   Our Pabna correspondent report that two persons were killed in separate road accidents in Pabna on Wednesday.
   Kabirul, 32, of Handial in Chatmohar upazila was killed when a Pabna-bound tempo plunged into a roadside
   ditch on the Pabna-Baghbari Road in the Bhangura rail crossing area.
   In another accident, a speeding truck crushed a minor girl on Pabna-Sujanagar Road.
   The dead was Lili, 4, daughter of Ibrahim Sheikh of village Dublia under Sujanagar upazila in the district.
   The police seized the truck and arrested its driver and helper.
   Two separate cases were filed with the police.
   In Comilla, two persons were killed and three others injured on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway in the Potia area under Daudkandi upazila Wednesday night.
   The deceased could not be identified immediately.
   The police said the accident occurred when a Dhaka-bound microbus fell into a roadside ditch as its driver lost the control over the steering killing two persons.
   The injured were taken to the Daudkandi Health Complex. A case was filed.
   An UNB report from Satkhira adds: A minor boy was killed in a accident on the Satkhira-Shyamnagar Road at Nalta Bazar Wednesday afternoon.
   The deceased was Abdur Rahman, 9, son of Abdul Kuddus of village Hizla in Kaliganj upazila.
   The police said Abdur Rahman was crushed under the wheels of a passenger bus at about 1.30pm leaving him dead on the spot.
   In Chandpur, a teenaged boy was killed at Bagra Bazar under the district head quarters on Tuesday.
   The deceased was Mohammad Russell, 15, son of Shamsul Bepari of Bagra bazar.
   Local people said a human hauler hit an auto-rickshaw leaving its passenger Mohammad Russell dead on the spot.
   A case was filed.


Preparations afoot for largest
Eid congregation

United News of Bangladesh . Kishoreganj

All-out preparations have been made to hold the Asia’s largest Eid-ul-Fitr congregation at traditional Sholakia Eidgah in Kishoreganj. Local administration and Eidgah committee jointly made the preparations to hold the 180th Eid congregation here successfully.
   It is expected that more than 3 lakh Muslim devotees from home and abroad would take part in the Eid congregation like previous years.
   Khatib of Kishoreganj Boro Bazar Mosque Maulana Abul Khayer Mohammed Saifullah will conduct the Eid prayer, which is to begin at about 10:00am.


Housewife killed for dowry

A housewife was killed allegedly by her husband for dowry at village Ranigram under Faridpur upazila in Pabna on Wednesday.
   The deceased was Akhlima Khatun, 26, wife of Bahar Ali of the village. The police said Babar had long been pressing his wife to bring Tk 75,000 as dowry from the in-laws.
   On Wednesday night, Babar and his wife Akhlima were locked into an altercation following refusal to pay the money.
   At one stage, Bahar got angry and strangled his wife to death.
   Later, he poured poison into the mouth of her and declared that she committed suicide.
   On information, the police recovered the body and sent it to the Pabna General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination.
   Babar went into hiding after the killing.
