Sirajganj-Kazipur road link
to be restored in month

Sultana Yesmin Mili . Sirajganj

THE snapped road link between the Sirajganj district headquarters and Kazipur upazila is likely to be restored in a month, ending more than four months of suffering of people on two sides.
The direct road communications were snapped after flood had washed away road stretching 950 feet at Shaluavita and Boraitoli points on July 29. Repairing work of the flood-hit road of Sirajganj-Kazipur started on Wednesday, 102 days after the damage.
At least 20 thousand daily passengers including many government and NGO personnel, and businessmen have been facing serious problems since then. Besides, nearly four lakh people of Kazipur upazila have also got virtually detached from the district headquarters. Serious patients are the worst sufferers.
Businessmen said their trading had fallen drastically and they were counting huge losses after the snapping of road communications.
People in Kazipur town who want to go to the district headquarters have to count about one and a half an hour extra time with break journeys for the 28-kilometre road.
Md Abu Rawshan, executive engineer of the Sirajganj Roads and Highways Department, told New Age they hoped that the damaged portion of the road would be repaired in a month.
‘We hope that the communications would be restored in a month as the repairing work is progressing in full swing,’ he said while visiting alternative road-link at Shaulavita point on Sunday noon. He said they took the project on an emergency basis considering the sufferings of the people.
The alternative work of earth-filling and making bailey bridges involving Tk 61 lakh started in the first week of this month at Shaluavita and Boraitali points of Sirajganj-Kazipur road, Rawshan said.
The department had already sent a proposal to its higher authorities demanding Tk 14 crore for the overhauling of
   different flood-hit points of
the 28-kilometre road link, he said. After sanction of the money the communications would be smooth, he said. The RHD executive engineer, however, could not specify when the money would be sanctioned.
He said a team of the Asian Development Bank had already visited the area and was likely to give financial support for the overhauling.
