Farmers face crisis of IRRI-Boro seed
Our Correspondent . Moulvibazar

Acute crisis of seed is hampering seedbed preparation for cultivation of IRRI-Boro paddy in different upazilas of Moulvibazar.
Farmers in the district are not getting required quantity of seed for preparation of seedbeds when there is barely one month left for the start of IRRI-Boro cultivation.
‘If the authorities fail to ensure adequate supply of seed soon, we will not be able to bring all our lands under IRRI-Boro cultivation this year, a farmer said.
Already hit by the back-to-back flooding, farmers in the district are now taking preparation for IRRI-Boro cultivation. But they can not prepare their seedbeds for want of necessary seed.
Sources at the Agriculture Extension Department, however, said there was no crisis of seeds in the district.
The department have got 453 tonnes of BIRI-28 and BIRI 29 variety seed against the total demand for 1,200 tonnes.
The demand for the remaining quantity of seeds will be met from the locally preserved stock, the department sources said.
Besides, the department will distribute 90 tonnes of seeds among the farmers free of cost, the sources added.
Some farmers said a large portion of the preserved stock meant for distribution has been damaged by the flooding.
‘We have been given only 20 kg seeds from the BADC seed sales centre against their demand for 100 to 120 kg,’ a farmer said.
‘In the situation, we will prepare seedbeds with our own seeds. But production will not be good due to its low quality,’ he added.
During a visit, our correspondent found that a large number of farmers are standing in a queue in front of the BADC’s seed sales centre at Shamsernagar road in Moulvibazar district town.
Laxman Debnath of Antehori village under sadar upazila said he came here to purchase seed.
‘I need 120 kg seed for his 24 ‘kiar’ (one kiar equivalent to 30 decimal of land), but he got only 20 kg.’
Masuk Miah of Kamarchak village said he needed 40 kg seeds for 10 kiar of land but he has get only 20 kg from the sales centre.
Many farmers did not get any seed and they were seen returning home empty-handed.
Subhas Chandra Ghosh, deputy director of the BADC’s seed wing of the Sylhet office, said they have supplied all the seeds from their stock.
He said a total of 581 tonnes of seed have been allocated for the farmers of Sylhet, Moulvibazar, Sunamganj and Habiganj under post-flood agriculture rehabilitation programme.
When contacted, the deputy director of DAE Moulvibazar district office, Laxmi Kanta Pondit, said there was no crisis seed in district. Farmers will get seeds according to their needs, he added.
