Over 50,000 char children
deprived of pry education

S Dilip Roy . Lalmonirhat

OVER 50 thousand children living in char areas spreading over 10 unions at five upazilas in Lalmonirhat are deprived of primary education mainly due to lack of primary schools, poverty of their parents and negligence of teachers.
These unions are located at the low lying areas beside the rivers Teesta, Dharla and Saniyazan. They are Khuniagacha, Rajpur, Bokanda and Kulashat under sadar, Mohiskota under Aditmari, Bhotmari under Kaliganj, Sindurna, Guddimari and
Boro Khata under Hatibandha and Kuslibari under Patgram upazilas.
There are 50 government primary schools and 65 registered primary schools in the char areas of this district. Many of them exist in name only as the attendance of students in these schools is very thin. The parents are less interested in sending their sons and daughters to schools for their abject poverty.
The teachers of many primary schools do not attend classes regularly. They often remain busy with their personal activities for earning extra money. They come to the schools only at the time of visit of the upazila or district education officer.
The location of many primary schools at inaccessible areas also discourages both the students and teachers to attend classes regularly. There are schools where the students and the teachers have to attend by crossing a number of canals or river. A good number of schools in char areas are not connected by any road whatsoever. It is always an uphill task to come to such schools risking many hazards.
Hares Mia, an inhabitant of Char Harcinchara under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila, said he is very keen to send his two sons and two daughters to primary school. ‘But I am unable to give them basic education as there is no school in our village. There is a primary school in our area. One has to cross the River Teesta to reach that school. The river turns dangerous during the rainy season’, he added.
Rasel, 8, son of Korban Ali of Milon Bazar Char, said he always dreamt of going to school for education ,but his dream remained unfulfilled because his father sent him to field to tend cattle.
When contacted, the district primary education officer of Lalmonirhat said that necessary steps would be taken soon to ensure the attendance of the teachers at the schools regularly.

Irrigation facilities boost
Pabna crop production

United News of Bangladesh . Pabna

A GOOD amount of land have been brought under boro paddy cultivation in nine upazilas in Pabna as 59 deep tube-wells, remained inoperative since long, pressed into service to supply irrigation water to boro land under a project of the Barind Multipurpose Development Authority.
Just three years ago hundreds of acres of land under the Barind project area in nine upazilas used to remain uncultivated due to lack of irrigation facilities and acute shortage of water.
But the situation has now changed dramatically after the BMDA took measures to supply irrigation water to dry parched land.
The authority marked the tube-wells remained inoperative for 1 to 20 years and repaired those to supply water for irrigation.
Since the BMDA started its activities in the project area in 2004, irri and boro paddy, wheat and other crops are being grown in abundance.
The BMDA activities have brought positive impact on the production of different crops during the last three years, the officials said.
There has been a bumper production of irri-boro in the Barind project area this season.
About 2500 hectares of land have been brought under boro cultivation in the current season with an output target of 15,000 tonnes of paddy.
As many as 2,852 families are now reaping the benefits of the irrigation and other facilities in the project area.
These facilities have improved their economic condition substantially and replaced their agony with hope. They are now looking forward for a better future.
M Afaz Uddin Sardar, 55, a farmer of village Cak Ugrogar under sadar upazila, said he cultivated BR-29 variety on three bighas of land this year and was expecting a good harvest.
Many farmers of the region have the same success stories to tell.
Executive engineer of Barind Project, Pabna, said the BMDA is one of the successful projects of the country, which has brought much change in agriculture, irrigation, communication and environmental development in the district along with Rajshahi and Naogaon.
