Smugglers engage poor children in trade
Dilip Roy . Lalmonirhat

THE smuggler syndicates are now engaging children of poor families in increasing number for carrying smuggled goods from across the border as Bangladesh Rifles and the Border Security Force of India have reinforced their vigil at border points to stop cross border smuggling and movement of people.
The law enforcers nowadays are not allowing the adults to come near the border points. The BSF is also using search light at night to check cross border movement of goods and people.
Locals said 10 smuggler syndicates are now active at sadar, Aditmari, Kaliganj, Hatibandha and Patgram upazilas. They are recruiting children aged between 10 and 15 years for smuggling goods into the country from different border areas because of some leniency of the security forces toward them.
They hire children for smuggling paying Tk 30 to 50 to each of them per trip. The poor parents of these children also do not object to their recruitment for smuggling purpose, according to sources concerned.
   BDR officials said
When contacted by New Age a top official of the BDR, who preferred not to be named, said they were trying to identify the children engaged in smuggling. When marked, the BDR would motivate their guardians to bring their children back from the crime.
The official also said their drive against the smuggling would continue.
