‘NO’ vote
Thanks to Wahid Choudhury (“No’ vote: a debacle of EC waiting to happen!’, June 9) for his concern about ‘NO’ vote provision in the ballot. There is no further need to elaborate on the topic for the said letter explains it thoroughly. We only hope that the EC would kindly consider this letter with due importance and reconsider their decision to include ‘no’ vote on ballot and drop the idea for good. Kindly facilitate smooth and easy voting system for the rural people who still depend on ‘symbol’ to select their representatives. It might not be premature to think that the EC is eroding its credibility by unveiling innovative thoughts and ideas which lack ground reality. We cannot afford now to experiment with new ideas. The EC may kindly concentrate on the preparation of correcting and completing the voters’ list as directed by the Supreme Court. I am an elderly Bangladeshi living abroad with high hope that the honest and dedicated politicians would get party nominations to contest in the upcoming election in 2008. This is where the impact of political and party reforms should be reflected. A reader On e-mail
New police law drafted
A law to end political influence is not enough. The police can become people-friendly only if they are made accountable to the people. This can be achieved if people are given the right to sue individual policeman for lodging false cases against them. So long as the police work under no personal accountability in law, false cases can easily be conducted by them for corrupt purposes. Same principle should apply to government lawyers and prosecutors as well - if they do not win the case they will not get paid. If this can be done, the government will then find many cases wound up because of lack of evidence. Otherwise we will continue to have senseless waste of public money which these lawyers earn by dragging cases without merit for decades. The police have been used by the politicians because the politicians found them dishonest and ready to do their bidding. If police were true to their oath and sincere in carrying out their duties, the politicians would never have the audacity to make them a part of their evil design. We have read in your paper about the heinous crime allegedly committed by the former state minister of home as he tried to cover up a murder case allegedly committed by a director of Bushundhara group. Why did the police agree to comply with the home minister’s instruction? Surely, the money went to their end as well. I Husain, Gulshan, Dhaka
