Biman privatisation

I congratulate the caretaker government for taking a good decision. In recent times, almost all the major airlines are facing stiff competition and trying to survive with different strategy. I hope by privatising Biman, it will help our airline to survive.

Please control price hike!

The government, to be more specific, the commerce ministry did little effective to control extortion and illegal stockpiling of products in order to stabilise the market. And these are the main reasons of skyrocketing price of the essentials. But it seems that the government has little control over these problems and hence the suffering of the people goes on unabated.

There is no doubt that the prices of most of the essential items have increased manifold. I have discussed this issue with a few importers, local traders and wholesalers. They pointed out two reasons as to why essentials have turned so dearer and in turn lowered the real income of the fixed income bracket.
   The reasons are:
   a) Costs of transportation have gone up.
   b) The importers, during the period of political government, had to pay huge amount of bribes to the concerned agencies.
The above two reasons suggest that due to inefficiency and corruption on the part of the authorities concerned the price of essentials have skyrocketed and continue to remain out of the reach of the common masses.

On weekend

The caretaker government has done many laudable jobs and I think it is only they who can declare weekly holidays on Saturday-Sunday without creating a furore as was the case earlier.
Considering social, economic and personal ramifications, I am staunchly in favour of declaring weekly holidays on Saturday and Sunday, with working hours between 9 AM to 5 PM (1-1.30 PM break between Monday-Thursday and 1-2 PM break on Fridays). I would like to put forward the following arguments in support of my preference:
Weekly holidays on Saturday-Sunday would be consistent with the global trend as well as most countries of South and South-east Asia. It is followed even in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The office-goers would not face any problem in attending Jumma prayers on Fridays, as there would be a one-hour break between 1 and 2 PM.
It would suit the needs of the country’s business community, especially those engaged in global trade and industry, because of identical working days of major trading partners.
It would be economically beneficial, as the logistic and utility expenses of the government would be reduced due to lesser number of working days.
It would be socially beneficial as town-based people would have more opportunity to interact with their family members and relatives in the village homes. There would also be more scope for tourism and excursions within the country.
It would be personally beneficial, especially in terms of health, hygiene and family, as people would be able to take rest after a hard week’s work and concentrate more on personal and family matters.
There would be no reduction of weekly working hours and the output at offices would be more focused due to longer working days.
