Incessant rain takes heavy
toll on Narail people

Crops and vegetables on 5,500
acres of land damaged

Our Correspondent . Narail

INCESSANT rain over the last one week has taken a heavy toll on life of common people in Narail.
Standing crops and vegetables on a vast tract of land have been damaged and normal life has become paralysed for heavy rain since July 1. The downpour has also inundated many areas in district town and adjacent areas.
According to officials in the local Water Development Board, lowland areas under Lohagara, Kalia and sadar upazilas were submerged due to the downpour coupled with onrush of water from the upstream.
The Department of Agriculture Extension said the rain damaged paddy plants on about 3,500 acres of land and vegetables on nearly 2,000 acres of land.
Abdul Haque, a farmer at village Kamalprotap under Lohagara, said he cultivated paddy on two acres of land. But about half of the crops suffered damage during the downpour. If the rain does not stop immediately, the loss may not be recovered, he added.
Many areas in the district town have gone under knee-to-ankle-deep water disrupting the normal activities of common people. The most affected areas are Musambia, Mahishkhola, Hatbaria, Bahir-danga, Bhatia, Barasula, Bhaw-khali, Government Victoria College premises and Durgapur-Dumurtala.
The plying of vehicles was suspended on some roads in the town where people’s suffering knew no bounds.
Most shops had to be closed and those which remained open could hardly find customers.
Kamal Hossain, a grocer at Rupganj Bazar in the town, said he saw an about 70 per cent decrease in sale over the last one week.
Kamrul Islam, a newspaper hawker in the Narail town, looked frustrated as he said that his sale decreased by 50 per cent during the last week.
The presence in educational institutions and offices appeared thin as most people preferred to stay indoors.
The day labourers could not manage work facing serious troubles in running their families.
However, the rickshaw-pullers earned two to three times higher than the usual time. But some of them said they suffered from cold-related diseases and a major portion of their income had to be spent for treatment.

Aus cultivation may exceed
target in Rajshahi

Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha . Rajshahi

AUS cultivation may exceed target in Rajshahi as transplantation of paddy has been progressing fast during the last couple of weeks.
Massive preparations are going on for making cultivation of the paddy a complete success everywhere.
Taking the advantages of the suitable climatic condition especially frequent rainfall, the enthusiastic farmers are seen very busy with transplanting saplings in their fields at present as they harvested bumper production of both boro and aman paddy along with getting expected prices of their produce.
The Department of Agriculture Extension has set the target of bringing about 42,700 hectares of land under the aus cultivation with a production target of around two lakh tonnes of rice in the district.
The DAE and the BRRI are providing necessary support services for the growers so that they get more yield. On the other hand, the Rajshahi Krishi Unnayan Bank provided credit support for the farmers.
Talking to the news agency DAE deputy director Rabindra Kumar Majumder said success had been attained due to seed supply in some extent through adoption of some effective steps.
However, farmers would cultivate aus paddy on about 15,000 hectares of more land than that of the target fixed by the DAE as they are getting requisite facilities particularly fertiliser along with excellent price of their produce, according to DAE officials.
In addition to the aus cultivation, the farmers have also been cultivating sugarcane on 25,300 hectares of land, papaya on 800 hectares, banana on 1500 hectares, vegetables on 680 hectares and seasonal fruits like mango and litchi on 610 hectares of land at present.
Referring to the uses of fertiliser especially urea in most of the cultivation land along with the fish culture ponds, Majumder said the farmers were getting fertiliser on the basis of their demand since the beginning of the current month.
There is no crisis of fertiliser in the region at present with effective steps taken by the higher authorities concerned, he added.
