Woes of potato growers in Munshiganj
Home Desk

FARMERS involved in potato cultivation in Munshiganj have to face many obstacles for its production though the vegetable plays a dominant role in the economy of the district.
Hassle in getting institutional loans, lack of support to combat the menace of pest attack and exploitation by the money lenders, middlemen and owners of cold storages are some of the stumbling blocks in the cultivation of this winter vegetable to its full potential, according to Focusbangla, a photo news agency.
The district produces nearly 10 lakh tonnes of potato annually.
Nearly 75 thousand families are dependent on its cultivation for their livelihood.
Many of the poor potato growers in the district lamented that they have no access to bank loans due to procedural complications and domination of brokers.
Most of the marginal farmers cultivate potato on their small lands after taking loan from the village money lenders at high rate of interest.
Yet many others arrange money for preparing lands for potato cultivation by mortgaging their houses, cattle and ornaments of their wives. A large number of farmers sell potato in advance to money lenders and take money from them for its cultivation.
Most of the potato growers said that they were deprived of fair price of their produce due to intervention of the middlemen in this trade who belong to powerful syndicates.
The syndicates control and manipulate the prices of potato in the district, they alleged.
Several potato growers said they were held hostage and exploited in many ways by the money lenders and owners of cold storage.
Sohrab, a potato grower of Betka, said that he kept potato in the Echo Cold Storage of Betka. But the owner of the cold storage sold his potato without informing him. The owner of the cold storage has neither returned the stored potato nor the price of it, he alleged.
Yet some more farmers said that cultivation of potato often suffers for the scarcity of potato seed and pesticides.
This crop is susceptible to cold injury and late blight
   disease.
But the growers alleged that they lack proper guidelines from the government agencies concerned to contain and control the pest attack and diseases. They often had to fight to combat these scourges on their own as they did not get support from DAE and the agricultural department.
Though there is a research sub-centre on potato the
potato growers get little help from it.
The help from the local administration for ensuring full supply of seed and other inputs is not at all encouraging, growers complained.
Though the nationalised banks have invested about Tk 900 crore in the cold storage industry, still the potato growers have to face many problems for the preservation of their produce.
