Wheat farmers overcome seed,
fertiliser crises

United News of Bangladesh . Rajshahi

FARMERS of the Barendra and Char areas Godagari upazila in Rajshahi achieved an unprecedented success by cultivating record amount of wheat during the current rabi season despite facing multifarious impediments like seed and fertiliser crises and irrigation problem.
Sources in the Department of Agricultural Extension said although a dire crisis of fertilisers and high-quality seeds at the advent of season partly
baffled the cultivators, wheat cultivation this year far surpassed last year’s farming acreage due to favourable weather and the tireless labour of the farmers.
DAE official Mobarak Hossain told the news agency that a clear diversity was seen in the mode of cultivation in the region as farmers were increasingly being inclined to wheat cultivation backtracking from paddy cultivation being discouraged by a drastic fall in production of transplanted aman paddy during the running season.
Local farmers cultivated wheat on some 5,900 hectares of land this year where some 4,800 hectares were brought under wheat cultivation last year. ‘Wheat has occupied the second position in crop production at Godagari upazila,’ an AED official said.
Admitting the crisis of seeds he said the farming became possible mostly because of rising awareness about seed production among the farmers in the last few years.
The farmers complained that there were not enough dealers in the region to meet the demand for fertiliser of the farmers, which was largely hampering the cultivation.
But still they are optimistic about harvesting a record quantum of wheat overcoming the prevailing perils.

434 NGO-run primary schools in
Natore yet to get textbooks

Our Correspondent . Natore

NEARLY 13,587 students of 434 NGO-run primary schools in the district are yet to get textbooks though their distribution among the students of 690 government, registered and community primary schools is now at the final stage.
The students of the NGO-run primary school need 41,064 copies of textbook.
An official of the Natore District Primary Education office said distribution of textbooks among the students of the NG0-supervised primary school would start soon after the completion of survey of these institutions.
There are 403 government primary schools, 250 registered primary schools, 35 community primary schools and 434-NGO run primary schools at six upazilas in Natore.
Meanwhile, the Moulvibazar correspondent of New Age adds: About 36,000 copies of textbooks on different subjects are yet to be distributed among the primary school students in Moulvibazar.
Sources in the department of primary education in Moulvibazar said that the demand of textbooks for nearly 2,50,000 primary school students of 900 primary schools in the district is 6,72,885 copies. Of this, 6,35,889 copies have already been distributed among the students since the distribution started on January 10.
Some 12,806 copies of mathematics textbook have so far been supplied to the students of class five as against the demand of 26,342. Besides mathematics, the supply of textbooks on English is also far short of the demand, according to the sources.
Some guardians of students alleged that different libraries have been selling textbooks at high prices violating the rules. These textbooks are meant to be distributed among the primary school students free of cost.
They further said that important pages were missing from many of the old and used textbooks which were supplied to the students. Distribution of old and used textbooks with missing pages has frustrated the tender hearted primary school children, they noted.
A primary school teacher said there is a provision for the distribution of 50 per cent new textbooks and 50 per cent old and used textbooks among the primary school students.
The district primary officer said the rest of the books would be distributed soon.
