Launch movement on 3 routes halted
for emergence of shoals
United News of Bangladesh . Shariatpur
LAUNCH movement on three routes in Shariatpur has been halted recently due to emergence of a large number of shoals and drastic fall in water levels of the local rivers.
According to sources concerned, launch movement on Dhaka-Anguria, Dhaka-Kotapara and Dhaka-Vederganj routes have already come to a total halt since a number of large shoals have emerged in the riverbeds of the Padma near Sureswar river port and the estuary of the Padma and Meghna near Vedarganj upazila. Besides launch movement on Dhaka-Damudya and some other routes may be stopped any time due to the shoals.
The total halt of launch movement on the three routes brought a standstill to public life of those localities. Some 12 business centres in Vojsher, Damudya, Vederganj, Angaria, Dogri, Loukhola and other area are on the verge of closure, local traders said.
Besides, cultivation on some 40,000 hectares of arable land in five upazilas of the district is going to face a setback due to the scarcity of water.
Some of the cultivators said the recent flood caused a great loss to them as vast tracts of land were inundated during the boro season.
‘We will be in a catastrophic situation if we don’t get water during the current season,’ said farmer Shahed Ali.
A BIWTC official said it had become obligatory to immediately dredge riverbeds from WAPDA dam of Naria upazila and south side of Arial Kha, and from Sureswar river port to branch of Padma near Narayanpur under Bhedarganj upazila to avert further disaster.
But he could not confirm whether the dredging would start soon.
Bangladeshi farmer shot dead by BSF
Our Correspondent . Lalmonirhat
THE Border Security Force of India shot dead a Bangladeshi farmer on Lalmonirhat border on Sunday morning.
The victim was identified
as Abdul Karim, 25, of village Amjol in the Daikhowa fron-tier area under Hatibandha upazila.
According to BDR officials, Karim went to his bordering paddy field for irrigation in the morning. But the BSF troops in the Indian district of Kuchbihar fired two rounds of bullet at
him. He died on the spot.
A BDR team recovered the body and handed it over to his family soon after the killing. The Bangladesh border guards also sent a protest letter to the BSF and called for a flag meeting over the killing.
But the BSF did not turn up to the BDR call. Rather they (BSF troops) increased force on the border, forcing the BDR to be more alert.
Many villagers at Amjol and its adjoining areas left their home in the fear of firing between the BDR and BSF.
