Jhenaidah vegetable growers not getting expected prices
Delwar Kabir . Jhenaidah
THE growers of winter vegetables are frustrated as prices of various winter vegetables have started coming down in all the markets of Jhenaidah following its adequate supply during the last two weeks. The growers said due to fertiliser crisis their production cost was higher than the usual time this year. So, they expected higher prices of their produce to recoup the loss caused by the additional cost. But the prices are far below their expectations. According to the district Department of Agricultural Extension, about 10,000 hectares of land were brought under vegetables cultivation in the district this winter. The growers said different vegetables, including bean, cauliflower, cabbage, radish, tomato, and potato are being sold at lower prices at different markets of the district town and its adjoining areas. Visiting different markets this correspondent found that each cauliflower was selling at Tk 8 to 10 as against Tk 18 two weeks ago. Besides, each cabbage is selling at Tk 5 to 6 as against Tk 12, per kilogram of beans is selling at Tk 13 to 16 as against Tk 20, radish is selling at Tk 5 to 6 as against Tk 10, newly harvested potato is selling at Tk 18 to 20 against Tk 24, per bundle of spinach is selling at Tk 1.50 to 2 as against Tk 3, per piece of pumpkin is selling at Tk 10 to 14 as against Tk 20. The chilli is now selling at Tk 28 to 32 as against Tk 60 to 70 two weeks ago and per kilogram tomato is selling at Tk 32.00 whereas it was being sold at Tk 50. A number of farmers, while talking to New Age, narrated their disappointment at the down trend of prices of the winter vegetables. Abdul Latif of village Baraipara and Safi Uddin of village Dudsar were found taking back their vegetables from markets due to lower prices. They said they had better use the vegetables as fodder rather than selling those in the markets at lower prices.
