Freedom fighters without
allowance for 6 months

S Dilip Roy . Lalmonirhat

INSOLVENT freedom fighters in Lalmonirhat are in distress as the government has not paying their monthly allowance for the last six months, alleged some of the 1971 war veterans.
The authorities listed 1,350 freedom fighters of five upazilas under the token financial assistance of Tk 500 a month, which has been raised to Tk 600 from the current fiscal year.
Of them, about 500 freedom fighters, who are poor and physically unfit, live on the government allowance solely. Many of them borrowed from local moneylenders in the hope of repaying that after getting the allowance. But now they are in an awkward situation as they are not getting the allowance for the last six months.
Syed Ali, a freedom fighter at Sakoya under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila, said, ‘I am not in a position to earn money by selling labour. I always depend on the allowance of Tk
500 per month. Now I’m in a miserable condition as I have not gotten it for the last six months.’
‘I’m in need of money to buy food and medicine,’ he added.
Ali said he had only a small piece of land. ‘If I sell my small piece of land, I will die without food and shelter,’ he said.
Mozammel Haque, deputy director of the Lalmonirhat social welfare department, told New Age that they could not provide the freedom fighters with the allowance as the ministry concerned did not release the fund yet. He, however, hastened to add that the fund would be released by this month.
The government earmarked Tk 99.5 crore for monthly allowances of insolvent freedom fighters in the current fiscal year that began from July 1, up from Tk 78. 20 crore of the last fiscal year.
The freedom fighters said they experienced the same situation in the previous year.
The authorities should take proper step to disburse the money timely, they maintained.

THE cultivation of sugarcane in ‘ropa’ (transplanted) system for the 2007-08 season in the areas of Thakurgaon Sugar Mills was inaugurated on Thursday.
Commander of the joint forces of the district Lieutenant Colonel Belayet Hossain Khan inaugurated the system by planting sugarcane saplings in the land of a farmer at village Hariharpur.
As many as 2,000 farmers were given practical training by the mill authorities so that they can cultivate sugarcane under the system with much enthusiasm and zeal.
The mill fixed a target of cultivating sugarcane on 14 acres of land during the current season.
Mill officials said over 21 tonnes of sugarcane could be produced from one acre of land, which is almost a double compared to the traditional cultivation system.
