Faces of the week

Those who made headlines this week and why…

Actor Hugh Grant was arrested on Thursday over an allegation he attacked a photographer in London, before throwing a tub of food at him. Photographer Ian Whittaker said he was kicked before the tub was hurled at him. The 46-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assault and has since been released on bail. Grant is best known for starring in romantic comedies such as Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill and About a Boy.
Hollywood star Jessica Alba has been crowned the sexiest woman in the world by readers of FHM magazine in the UK. The US actress, 25, beat glamour model Keeley Hazell and Desperate Housewives star Eva Longoria to take the title. ‘She’s a talented, successful and beautiful actress who clearly has sex appeal that translates worldwide,’ said the magazine’s editor, Chris Bell. Last year’s winner, Pirates of the Caribbean star Keira Knightley, dropped to 12th place.
Boris Yeltsin, who played a key role in the Soviet Union’s demise and became Russia’s first president, died on Monday, aged 76. Yeltsin - who had a history of heart trouble - died of heart failure in hospital. Yeltsin, who became Russia’s first democratically-elected leader after Gorbachev resigned in December 1991, saw his final years in office overshadowed by increasingly erratic behaviour and plummeting
   popularity as the economy suffered.
Former prime minister and Awami League supremo Sheikh Hasina dominated news headlines internationally after she was barred from boarding a flight in London to return to Bangladesh. The government eventually lifted the bar on her return after pressure mounted at home and abroad to let her exercise her democratic right to return. Hasina, who left the country in March, was visiting her son’s family in the US. On Sunday a Dhaka court suspended a warrant of arrest in her name.
Former prime minister and BNP chief Khaleda Zia was the subject of nearly every discussion on politics all of this week as the government abandoned its plans to exile her to Saudi Arabia. On Sunday, the High Court instructed the government to produce Zia in court within five days or explain whether she was being held under house arrest. On Wednesday the government announced there was no pressure on her to go abroad.
Indian cricket celebrity Sachin Tendulkar and his team-mate Sourav Ganguly were this week notably dropped from the Indian squad that will tour Bangladesh in May. Both senior cricketers have recently performed abysmally in the ongoing cricket World Cup, and have been blamed for undermining captain Rahul Dravid’s authority. Tendulkar is a demi-god of cricket in his country but detractors say he and many other members of the team concentrate too much on their product endorsement commitments.
Brian Lara the uncrowned prince of international cricket, knows how to retire in style. Lara retired from the international game this week to the anguish of millions of fans who have spent the last two decades mesmerised by the finesse of his strokeplay. Lara will go down in history for holding the highest individual score in the Test, one day, and first class versions of the game, as well as for being the highest total run-getter in Test history.
Bangladesh’s cricket coach Dav Whatmore, who is largely credited for the Tigers’ success in the preliminary stages ongoing cricket World Cup announced this week that he was not going to renew his contract with the Tigers’ after it expires in May. Whatmore is tipped to take the India-job after the 2003 cup finalists sacked their coach, having suffered a defeat at the hands of Bangladesh. Whatmore has said he will stay till the end of the India tour.
