Cricket at its worst
New Zealand-Bangladesh match was no match at all. The Tigers were outmatched, outclassed and outwitted. The young cubs were clueless and left without guidance and discipline. They were like little kittens coming in and out of the crease. Not even the rain came to their rescue or excuse. Captain Bashar, a mild mannered gentleman though he is, showed nothing other than his miserable self; a reluctant and perpetually self-apologetic captain with consistently poor performance, without spirit or guts that inspire a team. His is a caricature of ‘leadership’ while the Tigers merrily play high school cricket in the World Cup league. Rude yet true isn’t it? Lady luck smiled to get the Tigers into the Super Eight but even she is not obliged to keep smiling upon a bunch of incompetent amateurs lost in the Caribbean Wonderland. The entire management- the Board, the coach, the selectors must also stand up to be counted and share the blame. The euphoric cricket analysts at home need to sober up and keep their feet on the ground. Husain Dhaka
The execution
The government deserves our congratulations and good wishes for taking the bold step and executing the likes of Bangla Bhai and others. The government should also be congratulated for its intention of taking steps against the ‘godfathers’ of the militants. Now attention must be devoted to control the breeding grounds which continue to produce the raw materials for militancy not only in Bangladesh but also throughout the subcontinent. I am talking about the madrassahs where the young minds are made corrupt by the so-called ‘jehadis’. It will be worthwhile to merge the madrassah education with the mainstream education system to develop truly educated religious young people. Haq Dhaka
Karzai joke!
The supposed statement, as published in the New York Times, by the Afghanistan president Hamid Karzai that Pakistan is keen to colonise Afghanistan is just absurd. Afghanistan whose resources are already looted and the booty shared by the war mongers, is already a colony of the USA and Karzai is managing the affairs of Afghanistan on behalf of the occupation forces supplied by the NATO and led by the USA. Karzai only takes the dictates from Washington and the country is being ruined according to the plan scripted by the USA. Pakistan would not like to take up the burden of Afghanistan plundered by the occupation forces and ill-spirited pro-US Afghans. President Musharraf is already in rough weather owing to the disorder created by the ‘lovers of US brand democracy’ supported by its ‘patriotic’ media. One wonders, how could Karzai cut jokes when Afghanistan is still burning with serious strife. Dr Abdul Ruff Colachal JNU, New Delhi
Nurture our folk culture
How sad to see that Bangladeshi folk culture is disappearing. I hope Bangladeshi television channels make some documentaries on all forms of folk art, as a series, found in Bangladesh, inclusive of ethnic and religious minorities’ folk cultures. It will please those of us Bangladeshis living abroad who are ethnic minorities in other countries to know that back at home our culture is being valued and celebrated. The demise of folk arts may be due to the access to greater television satellite programmes. People all over the world would rather be addicted to television, rather than read a book, listen to the radio or learn the rules of some fine art or folk art. What a pity.
