Wrong operation by quacks
claims one life

ONE hernia patient died and another is fighting for his life at Nilphamari Sadar Hospital when two quacks performed operation on them on Friday noon.
Posing themselves as surgeons the two quacks, who are actually ward boys of Nilphamari Sadar Hospital, operated on Narendra Nath Roy and Biswanath Chakrabarty at their respective houses at village Roy Para under Nilphamari sadar upazila to remove their hernia.
Narendra died a few hours after the operation while Biswanath was admitted to the hospital on Saturday morning in critical condition.
On information, the police rushed to the spot, recovered the body and detained one Azad Rahim in this connection.
A case was lodged with the police.
The two ward boys, Zakir Hossain and Golam Rabbani, who performed the operation, fled the area soon after the incident.
When contacted, Dr Khorshed Alam, resident medical officer of the hospital, admitted the incident. He also visited the victim’s house.
Locals said the ward boys took surgical and other equipment to the houses of the two hernia patients from the hospital secretly for performing operation.
They also accused them performing many surgical operations outside the hospital in recent days on contract basis.

JOURNALISTS should play a vital role in creating awareness among people about the dreaded avian flu, the speakers said in the concluding session of a training programme in Cox’s Bazar on Saturday.
The Press Institute of Bangladesh with the assistance of UNICEF and cooperation of Cox’s Bazar Press club organised the 3-day training on ‘avian influenza and pandemic influenza awareness and preparedness.’
PIB director general Mridula Bhattacharya attended the concluding ceremony as chief guest while the Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner, Md Aminul Islam, was in the chair. Editor of the Dainik Cox’s Bazar Nurul Islam and former president of Cox’s Bazar Press Club Badiul Alam were present as special guests.
District livestock officer Golam Farook Talukdar, PIB instructor ASM Abdul Hoque and Cox’s Bazar Press Club general secretary Mohammad Nurul Islam also took part in the discussion.
Forty journalists of national, regional and local newspapers and electronic media participated in the training programme.
15 shops burnt

FIFTEEN shops were burnt in a fire at a Nilphamari market early Friday.
Eyewitnesses said the fire originated from the No 12 shop of Ramganj Bazar’s Mahila Market under Tupamari union in sadar upazila.
It soon engulfed the other shops that included medicine, grocery and clothes stores.
Fire Brigade vehicles from the district town, about 12 km off the market, managed to extinguished the blaze after two hours.
Four persons were also injured when a crowd rushed to bring the fire under control.
Affected shop owners estimated the loss at Tk 40 lakh.
Minor boy killed in road crash in Natore

A FOUR-YEAR-OLD boy was killed in a road accident in Natore on Sunday.
The deceased was Sajol, son of Afjal Hossain of the Moukhera Bazar area under Bariagram upazila of the district.
The police and locals said the accident took place when a truck ran over Sajol when he was crossing the road at a market. The boy died on the spot.
The police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. A case was recorded with the local police station.
