Power outages cripple life in Nilphamari
Our Correspondent . Nilphamari

THE entire Nilphamari district has been reeling under severe load-shedding for the last several days following the breakdown of two units of the Baropukuria power plant and low supply of electricity from Saidpur power centre.
Local sources said the power generation capacity of the Saidpur gas turbine power plant came down to 8 MW from 20 MW on September 19 for lack of overhauling as its machineries have been very fragile for long use.
The total requirement of power for six upazilas of the district is 33 MW. Of this, Saidpur upazila alone needs 24 MW because of concentration of several industrial units and existence of the industrial estate of the Bangladesh Small and Cottage industries Corporation there.
The two units of the Baropukuria power plant went out of order due to mechanical problem on September 8. Of them, one unit of 125 MW started operation on September 21 but could not improve the situation.
The entire district now remains without power for 12 hours a day, according to the sources.
The tripping of the two units has resulted in disruption of power supply to Parbatipur, Phulbari, Birampur, and Ghoraghat upazilas in Dinajpur and Domar, Dimla, Kishoreganj, Jaldhaka, Saidpur and sadar upazilas in Nilphamari.
Production in about 50 industrial units at the BSIC Industrial Estate of Saidpur has suffered a great setback because of load-shedding for long hours. Many industrial units have stopped production throwing nearly 20,000 workers out of employment.
Raju Podder, owner of Raju Aluminum factory at the industrial estate, said he had been incurring heavy losses due to frequent tripping of power. 'Though production in my factory has reached lowest ever level due to load-shedding, yet I have to pay the wages of the workers,' he added.
Many entrepreneurs of the area echoed Podder.
An officer of Baropukuria coal burnt thermal power plant on condition of anonymity said last week that it would take up to two months to restore the production of the power plant.
Saidpur gas turbine power plant source said it was very unlikely to restore the power plant's full swing production in a couple of weeks.

7 villages wiped out by erosion
Home Desk

SEVEN villages have been wiped out by river erosion in Chapainawabganj and Kurigram during the last few weeks.
Erosion by the mighty River Padma has taken a serious turn at Shibpur upazila in Chapainawab-ganj, rendering over 3,600 people in four villages homeless, according to UNB report.
Local sources said over 600 dwelling houses, a market place and two mosques of Joardarpara, Majhpara, Dakatpara and Babupur of Ujirpur and Daka unions have gone into the gorge of the Padma during the last few weeks.
People of three other villages, who came under erosion threat, also have started leaving their ancestral homesteads. The villages are Atrashia, Durlavpur and Lakshmipur.
‘I’ve to remove my house for the third time because of the erosion and now I’m totally penniless,’ said a dejected
Shefali Begum of erosion-hit Joardarpara village.
KM Nazmul Huda, executive engineer of the Water Development Board, confirming the fury of erosion told the news agency that necessary measures could not be taken yet for want of fund.
He also informed that the WDB has already undertaken a project, involving Tk 157.18 crore, to save sadar and Shibganj upazilas. The project proposal has been sent to the Planning Commission for approval, he added.
Huda apprehended that erosion could cause more devastation if necessary measures for land-protection are not taken right now.
The WDB had undertaken the left bank protection project of Padma during 2001-2002 financial year.
Under the project, eight solid spurs, a 20-km dam, 10 connecting canals and two cross-dams have been constructed.
The New Age Kurigram correspondent reports that the river erosion has taken a serious turn at Ulipur upazila. The Brahmapaputra and Teesta have devoured three villages including four schools at the upazila over the last two weeks.
The villages are Shantoshavi-ram, Char Bazra and Anantapur Majheepara. Some four thousand people of the villages have become homeless due to the erosion. They have taken shelter to open sky or other places and passing their days in inhuman condition.
Only one out of the four schools could be shifted to other places. Uncertainty looms over the future of the students of the rest of the schools.
