Aman production in Jhenaidah
likely to miss target

Our Correspondent . Jhenaidah

AMAN production at six upazilas in Jhenaidah is sure to miss the target this season due to prolonged drought and high prices of diesel.
Sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension said the target of aman production was fixed at 2,43,323 tonnes from 91,000 hectares of land in the district this season. But production would be far short of the target because of scanty rainfall. About 771 mm of rainfall was recorded in the district from May to August this year as against 1,057 mm during the corresponding period of the last year.
The paddy plants transplanted at different upazilas have been withering and looking pale for want of water on the land.
Many farmers are unable to press pumps into operation because of high price of diesel. It cost Tk 1,500 last year to
irrigate one acre of land. Tk 3,000 to 4,000 is required to irrigate the same area of land by pumps this year, local farmers said.
Some well off farmers said they could not operate their power pumps to irrigate land due to drastic fall in the ground water level. There is also not much water in canals and water bodies in the absence of adequate rainfall this time. So they were not getting water from the open sources, they noted.
