Doctors’ strike paralyses
Moulvibazar Hospital

Our Correspondent . Moulvibazar

PATIENTS were left without health care services at Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital as doctors and nurses started a fresh strike from Thursday, protesting against repeated attempts to assault a doctor allegedly by some BNP men.
People rushing from near and far away returned home without treatment as doctors stayed away from outpatient department of the government hospital. No doctor and nurse also visited the wards, causing immense sufferings to patients lying in the hospital beds. Only emergency unit was open, hospital sources said.
This was the second strike enforced by the hospital staff in less than two weeks protesting against the attempt to assault on Chowdhury Omar Faruk, a physician of the 250-bed hospital.
The doctor was insulted allegedly by four BNP activists on October 4, prompting his colleagues and nurses to go for a 48-hour strike. The police had arrested Nahid, one of the four accused.
Meanwhile, Nahid was released on bail on Wednesday. On Thursday morning, he along with some associates tried to assault Dr Faruk again, witnesses said.
The Committee to Resist Assault on Physicians called an indefinite strike at the sadar hospital from Thursday. The Moulvibazar district unit of Bangladesh Medical Association has also extended support to the strike.
Dr Ahmed Faysal, convener of the committee, said they might extend the strike up to upazila and union-level health complexes, if the authority fails to nab the criminals.

The police and locals said a number of agitators seized Haragach 31-bed Health Complex in the morning demanding immediate removal of and exemplary punishment for Dr ATM Morshedul Alam and Dr Sorwar Hossein of the complex.
The agitators held the two physicians responsible for issuing fake medical certificates in exchange for money from the people.
When contacted over mobile phone, Dr Alam, the chief health officer of the complex, however, denied the allegation.

A LALMONIRHAT court on Wednesday sentenced a man to life-term imprisonment for abducting a newlywed woman in 2001.
The convict is Abdur Rashid, 28, of village Bawra under Hatibandha upazila in the district and also general secretary of the Bawra union BNP.
The additional district and sessions judge, Mohammad Ansar Ali, also fined him Tk 1 lakh, in default, to suffer one more year in jail.
According to the prosecution, a gang of criminals led by Rashid abducted Salma Khatun, 20, daughter of Abdus Salam, of the village on September 24, 2001.
As victim’s father lodged an abduction case with the Hatibandha police station accusing Rashid and his accomplices, the police later rescued Salma from the house of one of Rashid’s relatives after a month.
