Bus terminal remains unused
for three years

Minibus terminals mushroom in Jhenaidah town

Our Correspondent . Jhenaidah

A GOOD number of minibus terminals have sprung up in Jhenaidah town creating traffic jam on important roads and causing much sufferings to commuters, students, office goers and the members of the public.
Sources in the district administration said a central bus terminal was constructed at Pobahati area on the Jhenaidah-Magura Highway at a cost of Tk 2.26 crore. But the bus drivers of different districts refrained from parking their vehicles at the central bus terminal only one year after its inauguration in the year 2003 on the plea that its location was not suitable.
After discarding the central bus terminal the inter-district buses of different routes started parking their vehicles at many points in the town haphazardly.
Unauthorised bus stand at Chuadanga, Arappur and some other places in the town create severe traffic snarl throughout the day.
The traffic tailback in the town came up for discussion at almost every monthly meeting of the district law and order committee during the last several years. In every meeting the bus owners were requested to park their transports at the central bus terminal. The representatives of the bus owners association also agreed at every meeting to resume parking their transports at the central bus terminal. But they have not implemented their commitment so far.
When contacted, the deputy commissioner of Jhenaidah, Mohammad Nurul Karim Majumdar, said effective steps would be taken to persuade the bus owners to use the central bus terminal.
Meanwhile, the central bus terminal compound is now being used as grazing field for cattle.
