KULAURA-SHAHBAJPUR ROUTE
Authorities urged to re-open rail line

Our Correspondent . Moulvibazar

THE people of Moulvibazar district have urged the railway authority to re-open the Kulaura-Shahbajpur branch line immediately considering the inconveniences of a large number of commuters of this region.
The branch line was closed down in July, 2002 due to what the railway department said technical fault of the line.
Railway officials here said the Kulaura Railway Junction has lost much of its importance following the closure of 43-kilometre long Kulaura-Shahbajpur branch line. Over one thousand commuters used to travel on this branch line every day adding huge income to the railway department.
Development of the Kulaura railway station at a cost of Tk 4 crore without reopening the branch line first surprised many people of this region.
They were of the view that allocation of taka two crore would have been enough to correct the technical defect on the branch line. People by and large questioned the propriety of developing the Kulaura railway station ignoring the rehabilitation of the faulty branch line.
Yet many other people of the region blamed the ministry concerned for its failure to remove the small fault on the branch line though about four years have elapsed since the detection of the defect.
Kamal Ahmed Juned, chairman of the Kulaura Municipality, demanded reopening of the branch line as early as possible for the convenience of a large number of commuters.
Mukim Uddin Ahmed, president of the Kulaura unit of the Sylhet Division Develop-ment Council, also called for reopening the branch line forthwith.
