Schooling on boats in
flood-prone areas

Our Correspondent . Natore

A LOCAL non-government organisation has chalked out a novel literacy programme to impart primary education to the children of poor families living in the flood prone areas around the Chalan bil.
Most of the areas around Chalan bil bordering the districts of Natore, Sirajganj, Pabna and Bogra are inundated by flood water almost every year. As the flood totally disrupts the communication system, the children of the poor families can not go to schools. Besides, most of the primary schools in the region remain closed for three to four months in a year during the rainy season.
Moreover, the people of Chalan bil areas remain stranded almost round the year due to prolonged water logging.
To overcome the problems of education of the children of this area, Shidhulai Swanirvar Sangstha, an NGO funded by the Gates Foundation, has introduced boat school system in 2002 to spread the light of education among the poor children of the area.
The teachers of this organisation go to different places of the area by boats which are equipped with books suitable for the primary level students and impart lessons to the students in boats. Each boat school has enrolment of 30 to 35 students. The students of the boat schools are given education up to class three. Some other students are taught how to read and write only.
The boat schools have mobile phone, computer and materials related to drawings and dramas. These facilities in boat schools generate much interest among the students.
The boat schools have imparted elementary education to 2,640 children of the region since 2002.1,800 students are now on the roll of SSS.
Some 10,800 people use the boat library. The number of the computer users of the boat schools stands at 10,368.
Abul Hasnat Mohammed Rezwan, executive director of SSS, said the boat schools provide primary education to the children with a focus on environment. ‘Our aim is to take the school to the door steps of the children living in inaccessible areas and pave the way for their primary education,’ he said.
Mamum Hossain, a student of Bardanagar boat school, said, ‘Attending the classes of this unique school I have learnt how to protect family environment, save threatened fish resources and conserve pure water.’
Abdul Matin, a farmer, said, ‘Using a computer is often the wildest imagination of the rural people. The computer programme of SSS gave us opportunity to know pest control measures without poising the water of rivers, get access to chart of the latest commodity prices and learn many things associated with the activities of daily life.’

5,500 cases pending with Narsingdi courts
Our Correspondent . Narsingdi

AS MANY as 5,500 cases have been pending with different courts in Narsingdi for a long time delaying justice to the justice seekers.
According to court sources, shortage of class one magistrate is a major impediment in disposing of the cases of serious nature. There is only one first class magistrate at Narsingdi at the moment as against the requirement of five class one magistrates.
The sources pointed out that there were cases which should be dealt by the first class magistrate only. But dearth of class one magistrate has been hampering the disposal of the pending cases.
The Narsingdi deputy commissioner, Md Firoj Salahuddin, while talking to New Age, admitted that there has been backlog of cases for want of adequate number of first class magistrate. 'Only one first class magistrate is now working here whereas we need five class one magistrates,' he added.
Advocate Abul Kalam Azad and Advocate Amjad Hossain, president and general secretary of the district lawyers' association respectively, said judicial activities were being hampered due to shortage of first class magistrate.
