Killing of garment factory
worker condemned

Staff Correspondent

Different social and political organisations on Tuesday condemned, and protested against, the killing of a garment factory worker in Savar on Monday and police attacks on the agitating workers on Tuesday in different parts of the capital.
The organisations, separately expressing solidarity with the agitators, urged the government to meet the rightful demands of the garment workers and pay compensation to the family of the slain worker and the workers who were injured in the police attacks.
The Bangladesh Society for the Enforcement of Human Rights (BSEHR) urged all concerned to settle the issue by following the labour laws that protect the rights of the workers.
President Manjurul Ahsan Khan and general secretary Mujahidul Islam Selim of the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), in a press statement, demanded unconditional release of the arrested garment factory workers and their leaders and proper compensation to the affected workers.
They also urged the government and others concerned to fulfil the demand of the workers to boost the garment sector.
Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD-Inu) in a statement demanded immediate punishment of the persons responsible for killing the worker and compensation to the injured workers.
JSD leaders, terming the alliance government as ‘killers’, said that one cannot want anything from a government which kills workers who are demanding their minimum rights in order to survive. They demanded immediate re-opening of all the garment factories that have been closed down.
The JSD-backed Bangladesh Chhatra League and Bangladesh Jatiya Sramik Jote separately, in protest against the police attack on workers, staged demonstrations and held rallies in the capital.
Another organisation, the Gono Songhati Andolon, expressed solidarity with the movement of the workers and urged all to spread the movement all over the country to realise the rightful demands of the poor workers.
