Residents of Moulvibazar town face
acute crisis of drinking water

Our Correspondent . Moulvibazar

Most of the residents in the Moulvibazar town have been facing crisis of drinking water as tube wells in many areas have become useless following drastic fall in the underground water level.
About 40 to 50 per cent of the total population have access to pipe line water of the municipality.
The inhabitants outside the network of pipe line water of the municipality have installed tube wells at their homes to get water. But many of these tube wells are now unable to lift water as the water level of the underground water has gone down.
The residents under the pipe line network of the municipality are not also getting supply of water according to their need. The deep tube wells of the municipality have the capacity to supply seven lakh gallons of water everyday. But sometimes, the volume of the supply of water comes down to 30 to 40 per cent due to mechanical troubles in the water pumps, some residents said.
With the advent of summer, acute water crisis has been prevailing at Kalimabad, Gobindasree, Dharkapon, Sayerpur, Darga-moholla, Barkapon and court areas. Many families of these areas can not even store adequate water for drinking only, let alone for bathing and washing.
Municipal sources said implementation of the Tk 5.5 crore surface water treatment project would greatly ease the problem of drinking water. But most of the residents of the municipality said they were tired of hearing about the water treatment project for the last several years.
‘We don’t understand why the project is not being implemented although the executive committee of the national Economic Council has approved it a few years ago ?,’ asked a resident of the town. Many in the town shared his view.
