VOX POP
Argentina, Brazil are favourites
for street aficionados

Amit, Masters student, DU

It’s much more fun here than watching it at Jagannath Hall on the television. The space is big, it’s cool in here and the atmosphere builds up too with so many people around. Watching the game on big screen is a totally different experience. The crowd also depends on the matches, the bigger the teams the bigger the crowd, and then you get a feeling of watching the match live. And it is also safe for the ladies. I’ve watched almost all the games but I’ve made sure I didn’t miss any of Italy’s games. I hope they win this time around; it’s been a long time now.

   Md. Ismail Hossain, construction worker

I’ve only been watching the matches here at TSC. We started working over here just around the time when the World Cup started. At first it felt bad realising the fact that I won’t be able to watch the matches, but it was a pleasant surprise when I saw the big screen was installed here. I watched the first few matches on television at a club in the locality. It got cramped there as so many people came there to watch it. This is a good move by the government and I hope they will take such initiatives in the future, like next year during the World Cup Cricket. And I’ve also seen a match or two at Abahani Club on the big screen there. I really am thankful to the government for the initiative they have taken in ensuring that football lovers, who don’t have access to watching the matches, can enjoy the games at so many places. I’m supporting Argentina and whenever Argentina or Brazil are playing, the atmosphere is amazing. Even though Argentina didn’t beat the Netherlands, watching the match here felt really good with so many Argentinean fans around. They will win the World Cup.

   Serajul Haque, TSC staff

It’s good to see such a gathering till late at nights. The students are enjoying it and so am I to some extent. I have duty all day long, hence I cannot watch the late night matches as my age doesn’t permit so and I need to sleep. Had this screen not been installed, I’d have to watch it on television in the staff quarters and it wouldn’t have been that much fun. As far as supporting certain team is in question, I don’t support anyone. May the best team win.

   Zakir Hossain, rickshaw puller

Had Saviola played last night, then Argentina would’ve won. Too bad he had to sit out the game for his two yellow cards. But the shot that rattled the goal post, how close was that? I’ve been watching almost all the night matches on big screen at Brother’s Union Club and haven’t missed any of Argentina’s games. On nights I watch the match, I pull rickshaw all night long as the police will harass me if I am returning home in Shyampur alone, especially with the current political situation. I sleep at 7AM and then again leave after lunch. I come back home to watch the evening matches on television at a local club everyday. But the atmosphere at Gopibagh is a lot of fun. During big matches the crowd builds up to almost a thousand or fifteen hundred. I’ve heard crowd of the growing up to almost two thousand. When it comes to supporting a team, I’m all for Argentina. If they exit early, it would be almost the end of the World Cup for me. But the second round will be critical in giving an idea of the eventual winners. But at the end it should be Argentina that should be holding the cup.

   Aminur, peanut vendor

I can only watch the evening matches, as I have to be home in Rayerbazar at night. Apart from this screen at Abahani, I don’t have anywhere else to watch the match. I’m supporting Argentina but I could only watch their second match, as the rest of the matches were late at night. There are a lot of people during the evening matches, especially if it’s a Brazil or Argentina games, or some other heavyweight. There is a lot of shouting and cheering then. Because of the matches, sales have also gone up and I earn a bit more than what I used to earn before the World Cup. And during big games, the sales are even higher.

   Helal, Engineering student

I come to Abahani from Jhigatola almost every day to watch the evening matches. I did watch a few matches that kicked off at 10PM, other than that I watched the night matches at home as I am ill and need to rest. The atmosphere is really good. Brazil will win. Though the way they have been playing might have disappointed a few people but they are playing it smart. They score a goal or two and then concentrate more on keeping that lead. Other teams who have tried scoring more have ended up with conceding fouls and getting booked. It feels good to watch the games here with so many others and it’s also safe here. If similar steps are taken during the World Cup Cricket, it will be fun as Bangladesh will be participating and the atmosphere will be terrific.
