Potato price jumps up in Nilphamari
Our Correspondent . Nilphamari

THE price of potato has shot up to record Tk 16 per kilogram in the local markets in Nilphamari from Tk 5 last year. The price spiral of this crop by more than three times this season has upset the common people belonging to lower income bracket.
Local traders attributed the high price of potato this season to low production. Acute crisis of fertilisers and short supply of quality seed are mainly blamed for the low production of potato this time. Local traders have expressed their apprehension that the price of potato may go up to Tk 25 per kilogram in the coming months.
The cold storages in the district have not been able to preserve potato to even one fourth of their total capacity due to low production, power outage at frequent intervals and reluctance of the growers to store their produce in cold storage.
In the past years, the cold storage owners used generators when electricity tripped. But this year, many of them are not operating generator for abnormally high prices of diesel.
Potato growers are not storing their produce in cold storages this time fearing that they will perish or get rotten for irregular supply of electricity.
Erratic and inadequate supply of power by the Power Development Board and the Palli Bidyut Samity has created this fear among the potato growers.
Local sources apprehended that the northern region might be facing acute crisis of potato seed during the plantation period next year. This will prompt the government to import potato seed from foreign countries.
