Erosion makes 800 people
homeless in Netrakona

Our Correspondent . Netrakona

EROSION by the rivers Mogra and Kongsa has wiped out 200 dwelling houses and devoured 500 acres of land with standing crops affecting more than 800 people at sadar, Barhatta, Atpara and Madan upazilas in Netrakona.
The erosion by the two rivers took a serious turn in the wake of torrential rain and onrush of water from the hilly region across the border for the last several days. Many of the victims of erosion have taken shelter at flood shelters and neighbouring villages.
The inhabitants of Dashar, Borail, Sunajur, Fakirar Bazar, Mirzapur, Najirgonj Bazar, Gonzar Bazar, Modhuakhali and Deoshree under the four upazilas were severely affected by the erosion of the two rivers.
Local people dumped sand bags and piled bamboos to protect their villages from the menace of erosion, but they were washed away by the strong current of the rivers. Erosion takes a serious turn during the rainy season every year and erodes hundreds of arable land and dwelling houses.
Over 400 families used to live at village Mirzapur under Atpara upazila four years ago.
But the river Mogra engulfed 500 acres of land leaving 250 families homeless and landless.
Talking to New Age, some affected people said they urged the government time and again to construct a four-kilometre long dam from Najirganj to Norbotkhali under Atpara upazila and five-kilometre long dam from Fakirbazar to Dashder under Barhatta upazila to save cultivatable land and dwelling houses from the erosion. But their appeal seemed to have fallen on deaf ears, they said.

Kindergartens beset with
problems in Lalmonirhat

Our Correspondent . Lalmonirhat

MOST of the kindergarten schools in Lalmonirhat are plagued by shortage of qualified teachers, lack of benches, accommodation, furniture and absence of proper academic environment.
There are more than 20 KG schools across the district. Many of them have no permission from the authorities concerned. These schools were set up with the sole motive of earning money and not for imparting quality education to the children, local sources said.
Though the parents have been spending substantial amount of money for the education of their children in these schools, their wards are deprived of proper education as they are being run by unqualified teachers. Unemployed youths with no teaching experience and training have been recruited by the school authorities to take classes in these KG schools.
A guardian of student of a KG school in the district town said he had to spend substantial amount of money every month for the outfit, books, pen, papers, tuition fees and other expenditures for his ward. ‘But I am totally frustrated over the poor quality of teaching, poor environment and poor facilities in the school’, he added.
Most of the KG schools in the district town have been established in the rented houses in the residential areas. The schools have no sufficient space in the class rooms and no play ground for the recreation of the students.
Local sources said these KG schools do not follow any integrated syllabus. The school authorities ask the students to buy text books, papers, painting boxes, outfits and other materials from the shops of their choice. They recommend particular shops only for getting commission from them, it was alleged.
Some guardians were of the opinion that the education department should monitor the activities of these KG schools at regular intervals so that they can not cheat the students and their guardians.
