Fair prices encourage jute
growers in the north

The area under jute cultivation this year is 12 per cent higher than that of the previous year

Our Correspondent . Rangpur

REMUNERATIVE prices of raw jute last year have encouraged the farmers of eight northern districts to put more land under jute cultivation this year.
About 60,000 hectares of land were brought under jute cultivation in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat, Nilpha-mari, Dinajpur, Thakurgaon and Panchagarh this year. The area under jute cultivation this year is 12 per cent higher than that of the last year. Kurigram topped the list with 15,000 hectares under jute cultivation followed by Rangpur with 9,900 hectares.
A total of 7,300 hectares were brought under jute farming in Gaibandha, 6,000 hectares in Lalmonirhat, 8,500 hectares in Nilphamari, 4,200 hectares in Dinajpur, 3,900 in Thakurgaon and 5,500 hectares in Panchagarh. The sources in the Department of Agriculture Extension sources said nearly 21 lakh, 70 thousand and 400 maunds of raw jute were likely to be produced in these eight districts this season.
Harvesting of jute has already begun. Jute is now selling between Tk 450 and 500 per maund according to quality. Its prices are likely to rise further in the days ahead, jute traders said.
Ramuji, a jute trader of Rangpur, said soil of this region was very suitable for the luxuriant growth of jute. The growers would be willing to bring more land under jute cultivation if they got fair price for their produce and inputs for its cultivation at reasonable prices.
Some jute growers said they were facing problems in marketing raw jute.
In the past, different state run organisations such as Bangladesh Jute Corporation and Bangladesh Jute Mills Corporation used to buy raw jute from the growers directly. As these organisations have ceased to exist, the growers are now fully dependent on the private buyers who manipulate the jute prices for their own benefits.
Besides, the poor jute growers often fall prey to the machinations of the middlemen in the jute trade. These middlemen control jute prices in rural markets and cheat the growers of fair price, according to them. They also cited high prices of jute seed, fertilisers and other inputs as the main impediments in the cultivation of jute on a wide scale.
Mustafa Azad Chowdhury, president of the Rangpur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, sought the government’s intervention in purchasing jute from the growers directly for ensuring its fair price to them.
