Frank Sinatra: the voice of the century
BBC

If you haven’t heard My Way or Strangers in the Night, you’re living a very sheltered life. You might know of popular cover versions but have you heard Frank sing? The king of the crooners is the focus of this two part documentary as friends, acquaintances, lovers and colleagues gather together to assess the life of one of the 20th century’s greatest singers.
Born in Hoboken, New Jersey of first generation Italian immigrant parents, the skinny kid, Frank, was doted on by his fiercely protective mother, Dolly. Not a great success at school, Frank was encouraged to work the local New Jersey clubs and roadhouses, earning little more than cigarettes and sandwiches.
Sinatra’s concerts at the Paramount City became legendary. Mobbed by teenage girls, he went on to become a major recording star and consolidated his position by becoming a movie icon in Hollywood.
From his humble origins, through his bobbysoxer years of screaming teenage adoration, his break as a soloist, his mature work, his films, his women, his politics, his enemies and his friends, these films celebrate the life and career of the American Legend.
Frank Sinatra retired from the stage in 1995 - after 60 years as a professional singer. He died on 14th May 1998.

Potter author inspires young people

JK Rowling and singer Ms Dynamite are among the diverse group of famous people that young people aspire to emulate, according to a survey.
The YouGov poll for the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) found that almost one in 10 (8%) teenagers aspire to be like Harry Potter author J K Rowling, compared to 4% that want to be like Tony Blair.
The research found that one in six teenagers believes they will find success through celebrity, and more than one in 10 (11%) would drop out of education or training to be on TV. But the LSC calculated that the odds of success through reality TV are around one in 30 million.
Ruth Bullen, of the LSC, said, ‘If making money is the reason a young person wants to become famous, then by staying on in education or training they can significantly increase their future earning power by gaining these essential qualifications.’

Hang me if I’m guilty: Salman

‘I am disturbed Hang me if I’m guilty’, said Bollywood actor Salman Khan to a court here while pleading for early disposal of the Chinkara poaching cases of 1998 against him. He appealed to Chief Judicial Magistrate B K Jain, according to Public Prosecutor Jeevan Ram Choudhary.
Choudhary said the Bollywood star made the appeal to judge after recording his statement, along with 5 others, in the case relating to poaching of Chinkara deer in Ghoda farms on October 11, 1998.
Salman plea was not in the court records as he ‘made the gesture after recording the statement in the form of a request’, Choudhary said. Salman’s counsel Hastimal Sarswat told PTI that the actor stated before tha judge that he was innocent and was ‘falsely implicated in the poaching cases’.
A huge crowd was present outside the court to catch a glimpse of the actors, but the police had set up barricades to prevent the stars from being mobbed.
