SATKHIRA COP KILLING CASE
3 sentenced to death, 4 jailed for life

A Satkhira court on Monday sentenced three persons to death and four others to life-term rigorous imprisonment for killing two policemen about three years ago. The convicts who were sentenced to death are Raihanul Islam, Zakir Hossain and Abid Ali — all are residents of village Bandhal under Satkhira sadar. The life-term convicts are Salek, Sobhan, Shahin and Milon of the same village. Of them Salek and Sobhan are brothers. According to the prosecution, the convicts hacked two police constables — Fazlul Haque and Motaleb — to death while they were on patrol at Itagachha in the Satkhira town at midnight on February 5, 2003. Another constable Ahad became injured in the incident. Ruhul Amin, a havildar of the police, lodged a case with the Satkhira sadar police in connection with the murders on February 6, 2003. Judge of the Satkhira additional sessions court-3 Osman Hayder delivered the verdict after deposition of 27 witnesses.
Two killed, two injured in BSF firing

The Border Security Force of India shot a Bangladeshi farmer dead on the Telkupi frontier under Shibganj upazila in Chapainawabganj on Mondy. Sources in the Bangladesh Rifles said the Indian border guards shot Masud, 27, son of Mohammad Islam, of Shahbajpur union under the upazila when he went to his cropland. They also took the body into their territory. The BDR sent a protest note to the BSF and asked them to return the body. The BSF also killed another Bangladeshi farmer, Kamal, on the Chawkpara frontier of the district on February 1. Meanwhile, BDNews adds: One unidentified person was killed and two others were injured in the Dungdungi border area under Biral upazila in Dinajpur in BSF firing. The deceased and injured could not be identified immediately. BDR sources said BSF members fired on the three persons when they were crossing the barbed wire fence into India. One person died on the spot. Other two injured persons fled into India. After the firing incident, a flag meeting was held between the Bangladesh Rifles and Border Security Force where the Indian border guards claimed that the deceased and injured persons to be Bangladeshi. But the BDR did not agree with the BSF claim. The body of the dead was kept in an Indian hospital after post-mortem examination on Monday.
Farmer stabbed to death in Bagerhat

A farmer was stabbed to death allegedly by one of his cousins at his home at village Shekhra under Bagerhat sadar upazila early Monday after a quarrel over land. The victim is Sekendar Ali Mallick, 45, son of Babar Ali Mallik of the village. The police and locals said Sekendar got involved in an altercation with his cousin, Harun Mallik over a piece of land early Monday and at one stage Harun reportedly stabbed Sekendar with a dagger. As Sekendar cried out, locals and family members rescued him from Harun who managed to flee. The locals took Sekendar to Bagerhat Sadar Hospital where the on-duty doctors referred him to Khulna Medical College Hospital. He died in Khulna early Monday. No case was filed till Monday evening. Meanwhile, robbers killed one person in the sadar area under Satkania upazila in Chittagong early Monday. The police and local sources said a gang of 10 to 12 armed robbers swooped on the house of Sanaullah Kabiraj at Chhoto Barodona in the area at around 3:00am and looted valuables worth about Tk 1 lakh from the house. The housemaster, Sanaullah, sustained critical injuries when the robbers shot him, as he tried to resist them, the police said. He was admitted to Chittagong Medical College and Hospital where he died at around 8:00am. No case was filed and none was arrested till Monday night. Meanwhile, a BSS report from Satkhira said: A housewife was allegedly beaten to death by her husband for dowry at village Gajna under Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira on Sunday night. The deceased is Chaina Khatun, 23, daughter of Ismail Sana of village Sharoshkati. Victim’s family sources said Mizanur Rahman of the same village married Chaina about five years back. Chaina’s family agreed to pay a dowry of Tk 20,000 during the time of marriage. But, as Chaina’s family failed to pay the dowry in due time Mizanur started to torture her. Mizan, on the night of incident, beat Chaina for the money. As a result, Chaina died on the spot and Mizanur then poured poison into her mouth to prove that she had committed suicide, victim’s family alleged The police recovered the body and sent it to the Satkhira Sadar Hospital morgue for post-mortem examination. A case was filed with the police. But none was arrested. Police sources said they are waiting for the post-mortem report.
38 injured in clashes in two districts

At least 38 people were injured in separate clashes in Natore and Khulna on Monday. Thirty-four people were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers at Sakharipara under Natore sadar upazila on Monday. The police said the trouble erupted at about 10:30am when the supporters of Syed Ali and Kamrul Islam locked in a clash over dispute on a land. Fifteen of the injured — Rubel, 20, Yaad Ali, 45, Ismail, 35, Ishaq Ali, 25, Rahela Begum, 35, Mostafa, 35, Rabiul Islam, 30, Sohel, 28, Wahidud, 30, Syed Ali, 35, Faijul, 24, Nuru, 30, Sonavan, 50, Alim, 30, and Sagar, 40, — were admitted to Natore Medical College Hospital. Meanwhile, at least four students were injured including one seriously in a clash between two factions of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, the student wing of the ruling BNP, on the campus of Haji Mohsin College at Khalishpur under Khulna sadar Monday noon. Seriously injured Shahadat Hossain Hira, general secretary of JCD’s college unit, was admitted to Khulna Medical College Hospital, while the other three injured — Arifuzzaman Sumon, Al-Amin and Tutul — were given first aid at local clinics. According to the college students, the clash began when Shahadat went to the college office to take examination forms of the higher secondary certificate exams. The clash was a sequel to an old feud between the two groups over establishing supremacy in the party. No formal complaint was lodged with the police station by any of the groups, said the Khalishpur police.
