SSC examinees’ demo against
excessive fees

Our Correspondent . Lalmonirhat

AGITATED SSC examinees of two high schools under Lalmonirhat sadar upazila on Wednesday held demonstration in protest against realisation of examination fee which is much higher than the rate fixed by the education board.
Talking to New Age, several students said the education board has fixed a fee of Tk 825 for the SSC examinees of the science group, Tk 715 for the humanities and commerce groups and Tk 540 for Dakhil examinees of general group and Tk 665 for the science group.
But the management of Kabi Sheikh Fazal Karim Girl’s High School and Fulgachh High School under sadar upazila has fixed a fee of Tk 2,400 for the SSC candidates of science group and Tk 2,100 for the humanities groups.
There is allegation that the authorities of most of the 143 high schools and 67 madrassahs at five upazilas in the district have been realising excessive examination fees from the SSC candidates.
Farid, an SSC examinee from the Fulgachh High School, said he and some other poor students of the same school requested the school management to take examination fees at the rate fixed by the education board. But the school management flatly refused to comply with the request.
Many SCC candidates from several other schools and madrassahs had similar complaint against their school management.
When contacted, the management of the some high schools said they were realising extra money from the SSC candidates for the coaching and the poor fund.
Most of the guardians said realisation of excess money from the SSC candidates on the plea of coaching was totally illegal.
The district education officer of Lalmonirhat said coach fee was illegal. The school authorities should not force the students to pay coaching fee.
A number of guardians were of the opinion that though the school authorities were realising excessive money in the name of coaching and poor fund, the amount would be spent for the personal benefit of the influential members of the school management committees.1
Some 12,413 students will appear in the coming SSC examinations from 210 high schools and madrassahs in the district.

Diesel crisis affects boro
cultivation in Kurigram

Our Correspondent . Kurigram

CRISIS of diesel has been hampering the cultivation of Irri-boro in Kurigram as the farmers are unable to operate their shallow tube wells to irrigate land for want of this fuel.
Most of the farmers said they were moving from pillars to posts to procure diesel for the irrigation of their boro land. The farmers are now purchasing diesel at a very exorbitant price. Its price has shot up to Tk 42 per litre from Tk 37 about one month ago.
When contacted, several farmers informed that the crisis of diesel started in Kurigram, Gaibandha and Jamalpur when the floating oil depot of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation at Chilmari upazila ran out of diesel about four months ago. The floating depot was set up at that upazila in 1987 to ensure the supply of diesel to the boro growers of char areas in these three districts during the period of boro cultivation.
Hossain Ali, president, Oil Traders’ Association, called for supplying diesel in adequate quantity to the growers immediately as the boro cultivation season is fast running out.
Many farmers are operating diesel-based shallow tube wells to supply water to boro land instead of power pumps due to frequent load-shedding and power outage.
