Sensational cases pending
with courts for years

Witnesses warned not to appear in courts

Our Correspondent . Jhenaidah

AT LEAST nine sensational cases have been pending with the Jhenaidah courts for the last several years denying quick justice to the aggrieved families. Injunction by the higher courts and non-appearance of the witnesses on hearing dates were to be stated to be main reasons for delaying the disposal of the cases, court sources said.
In several murder cases, the hired men of the accused persons warned the witnesses not to appear before the courts for deposition and threatened them with serious consequences for non-compliance of their directive. Issuance of such threat was causing delay in the disposal of murder cases, the sources added.
In May 1998, Shafiqur Rahman Mom, was killed by his rivals. The police submitted charge sheet accusing 19 persons for their alleged involvement in the murder. Rokeya Khatun alias Lakhi of village Kotchandpur was killed by her husband in May 2002. The date of hearing was shifted 17 times for various reasons.
The case is under the Women and Children Repression court in Jhenaidah.

The case is now pending with the court of the session’s judge.
Five persons lost their lives when assailants shot them from a close rank at village Kutidurgapur under sadar upazila on February 16, 2003. Judgement on the case is yet to be delivered.

Nobody knows when the aggrieved families of the slain people will get justice.

Logging of trees goes on unabated
Our Correspondent . Faridpur

LOGGING of both mature and immature trees from the government land by some influential people has been going on at different places under Alfadanga upazila in Faridpur to the detriment of the environment.
Some of the UP chairmen and members, wood traders and contractors and village leaders are involved in felling trees from the roadsides, flood protection embankments and other state owned land at the upazila. They are felling trees either for making furniture or for selling them to earn money.
The local administration turned a blind eye to the destruction of various species of trees, local sources said.
The forest department of the district has taken up a social forestry programme for planting saplings at the sides of roads, railway tracts, embankments and on the government land. The UP chairmen and members were involved to make the programme a success. But the cooperation of the representatives of the local bodies was found lacking at most places, forest department sources said.
Instead of making the social forestry programme a success, the local leaders at many places across the upazila were found guilty of felling mature and tender trees from the government land for their personal benefits, the sources alleged.
