Application of spurious
fertiliser destroys crops

Our Correspondent . Panchagarh

Use of locally made spurious fertiliser has extensively destroyed jute, paddy and tomato plants and vegetables on about 200 acres of land at Chaklahat union under Panchagarh sadar upazila gripping the growers with frustration.
Local farmers said spurious SSP fertiliser is being sold at the local Kahruhat bazaar under the same union. Gullible farmers bought it at Tk 490 per bag and applied on their land.
Jute, rice and tomato plants and vegetables started withering and dying soon after the application of this fake fertiliser, affected farmers said.
Mujibur Rahman, a sharecropper of village Narayanpur Bhangapara, said he cultivated tomato on forty decimals of land and jute on two bighas. But tomato and jute plants were totally destroyed after the application of fake SSP fertiliser, he said with a tone of dismay.
Many of the poor farmers of the union were cheated by the sellers of the fake fertiliser.
Local sources said one Abu Bakkar Abu of the same union prepared fake SSP fertiliser on the basis of formula supplied by Golam Mostafa, an influential fertiliser trader of the region.
The police arrested Abu Bakkar Abu and van driver Zaman after the people of the union jointly submitted a petition to the district administration to take action against the guilty persons. But locals alleged that Golam Mostafa, the main culprit behind the production of artificial fertiliser, managed to remain out of the police dragnet.
