Forged notes rampant in south-west
STAFF CORRESPONDENT, Khulna

A gang of cheats is now deceiving the common people and small traders by counterfeit currency notes in the south-western districts.
In the past few days, some forged notes of Tk 500 and Tk 100 denominations were reportedly given to some traders in exchange of goods. Some people were also allegedly provided with counterfeit notes.
Sources said such notes are of high quality, and it is very difficult for the common people to identify whether they are fakes as the notes even bear watermarks.
The cheats usually hand over the fake notes either with other original notes or during busy hours. The people become easy victims of the cheats as they can’t identify whether the notes are fake or not.
Some traders at Barabazaar in the Khulna city alleged that they have recently got some counterfeit notes of Tk 500 denominations, but they have either destroyed or burnt them to avoid harassment by the police. They are now taking big notes after checking, they added.
The police arrested one Jamir Uddin Gazi with two forged notes of Tk 500 denominations from Agorghata Bazaar under Paikgacha upazila in Khulna on August 26 while one Shahidul Islam alias Shahid from Daratana Road under sadar upazila in Jessore with 54 fake notes of Tk 500 on August 27.
Another cheat, Kumaresh Roy alias Tuhin, was arrested with 190 counterfeit notes of Tk 100 denominations from Pather Bazaar under the Khan Jahan Ali police area in Khulna on September 4.
The police sources said Tuhin gave some important information to police about the providers of the forged notes during the interrogation.
Abdur Razzaq, an assistant commissioner of the Khulna Metropolitan Police, said that they have information about the gang of criminals. ‘The police will be able to nab the gang members soon,’ he hoped.
