Govt’s austerity measures remain paper-bound

Although two weeks have gone by after the government announced a 16-point austerity programme to check the culture of unnecessary spending by government offices and neutralise the oil price hike’s effect on the economy, only one of the measures — the two day weekend — is happily being implemented...[ + ]

When the train thunders past with a loud whistle rattling her portable earthen stove, Rokeya carefully moves to her shanty. She has no time to see where her two-year-old daughter is or to check whether she is safe as she is busy cooking for her family.
Little Smriti was engrossed in playing on the railway track when the train neared her, almost running over her.....

They are now confined to such expensive businesses, literally speaking, as the replacement of the old hardware with the state-of-art technologies and equipment, the start up of new projects without even effectively putting the old ones to use, and above all, allocating the senior bureaucrats new toys for all play and no work... Fund crunch, sluggishness
delay seismic station plan

An initiative for the establishment of three seismic observation centres and modernisation of the one in Chittagong could not be materialised in eight years because of ‘fund constraint and sluggish plans.’ Sources in the Metrological Department said the government in 1997 decided to set up seismic stations, monitoring and research centres in Dhaka, Sylhet and Rangpur and modernise the Amtali centre in Chittagong after the first such plan had failed to see the light of success in 1983...[ + ]
